mail.twc.com SMTP: RECEIVED: 421 Service not available, closing transmission channel

LucidObscurityLucidObscurity Posts: 15
edited August 21 in Internet 2018 Archive Sep 26, 2018

Since about mid-day 9/24 mail.twc.com SMTP on port 587 returns a 421 response upon connection. My understanding is 421 means the SMTP server is unable to function.

I am unable to send any email via the mail.twc.com SMTP server.

The following is the logs of the communication (the '*' are for privacy):

"SMTPC" 6916 43177 "2018-09-25 08:23:30.384" "107.14.73.68" "RECEIVED: 220 Welcome to Road Runner. WARNING: *** FOR AUTHORIZED USE ONLY! ***"
"SMTPC" 6916 43177 "2018-09-25 08:23:30.384" "107.14.73.68" "SENT: EHLO ******.***"
"SMTPC" 6724 43177 "2018-09-25 08:23:32.424" "107.14.73.68" "RECEIVED: 421 Service not available, closing transmission channel"

Please advise as to when the email server will be fixed.

Thanks

There is currently not a reported known issue with the email server.  421 errors tend to be generic errors and can be caused by varied issues including slow connections, attachments that exceed limits, file corruption or viruses.

If the issue is not resolved, we encourage you to contact support directly for further assistance.

This error is occuring.  I have been suffering as well since 9/24 3:08PM EST.

This is from the Cleveland area, and the same response is received from all rr.com smtp servers too.

The image indicates an issue with Outlook.  Are you able to send messages through the webmail site mail.twc.com?

I've tried hMailServer, Outlook and telnet (mail.twc.com port 587) all with the same results.

Using the website isn't a problem.  It's using a client with this as the SMTP.

The web client is able to send.

    DNS resolution looks fine:

Sorry, this is not really going to help, but I've been using that server all day without any issues, also from Los Angeles:

    telnet mail.twc.com 587
    Trying 107.14.73.68...
    Connected to mail.twc.com.
    Escape character is '^]'.

Not really sure what might cause that, especailly both being telnet access, which would rule out any strange TCP packets being sent.

What device is connected to the modem, as I noticed that there is one internal IP before you hit the TWC gateway.

    Cheers.

    Very interesting.

That hop you're seeing is an Asus RT-AC69. It's DMZ'd by the modem. Latest firmware.

DNS is handled by a Server 2016 domain controller internally...turned off on the router, but resolution looks fine anyway.

I'm actually a bit of a way away from L.A. (near Temecula). Would you mind sending at least a partial tracert? I'm curious if at some point we take the same path and interested in the points we don't have in common...as it would seem they might be the culprits.

    Thanks.

Called this in to support.  Tech walked through all the obvious options of the script.  Still being denied access to send/relay email to mail.twc.com.  telnet in and it doesn't even repond: long delay: then booted off.   This has been sent on to the engineers.

As a side note, does it matter that my ID and PWD to access all the spectrum/rr/twc websites aren't sync'd?  Even after updating with all of them it still doesn't work.  Heck, clicking the sign in at the top of this page fails, but I can go to spectrum proper, log in, and then refresh this page and whoo, I'm logged in.

Something is not right for some users out there, not all or the screaming would be intolerable.

I am also having this issue, I was able to use port 25 for years without any issue until around yesterday afternoon. Now neither port 25 nor 587 are functioning at all. The error on the server happens as soon as you send any commands, so it is prior to any authentication or other potential client issues.

Also just tested from work and it works from our TWC business class service, but not from my residential service at home. There don't appear to be any routing issues either. It seems like the SMTP server may be rejecting my connection based on my IP address even though I am connecting from a TWC IP.

    @phila

That has been my observation and suspicion as well; that they're limiting or flagging residential IPs and permitting business class ones.  How is a customer expected to send ANY mail, using a thick client, if their connection is being dropped like this?

On the other hand, I haven't been able to successfully use port 25 without authentication in years. Or maybe I stopped trying after I got port 587 working with auth.

Same problem here in Cincinnati, residential IP and I was relaying off of mail.twc.com for over a decade.  Sometime on September 22 that ceased:

    telnet mail.twc.com 587
    Trying 107.14.73.68...
    Connected to mail.twc.com.
    Escape character is '^]'.

    helo mail.domain.com
421 Service not available, closing transmission channel
    Connection closed by foreign host.

A couple of days later, they let me relay again but then a couple days after that they turned it back off.

    I am not blacklisted.

Please open up relay for residential IPs in the TWC network again!  I'm begging you.

I just noticed it's working again for me (Los Angeles area). I've had a support ticket open with Microsoft Exchange Online for weeks trying to get forwarding to gmail working like I could with twc and have been checking every several days to see if they fixed the problem. So, at least for me and at least for now I can send email and foward to my gmail account.

Port 25 seems to be totally offline for me.  Connection disconnects as soon as it is established...

    [[email protected] postfix]$ telnet mail.twc.com 25

Port 587 is only slightly better, I can supply a DNS name before it boots me:

    [[email protected] postfix]$ telnet mail.twc.com 587

Stopped working again yesterday (10/30). I can also confirm port 25 is completely offline. Port 587 is again dropping the connection after the ehlo command. This is getting ridiculous. You guys should check out some of the deals FIOS has going...that's what I'm looking into at this point.

I spoke to someone there two days ago, and they (eventually, reluctantly) mentioned an internal ticket #219218, apparently affecting anyone using mail.twc.com.

At first, I figured Outlook was acting up in some way, but then I realized I couldn't send from my mobile device either...

Are you sure your mobile device is locked to WiFi using your Spectrum connection when you can't connect to Outlook?

If you have the same difficulty while accessing Outlook over your mobile device, it's not a Spectrum connection problem.

karlbeckman, I was speaking about Outlook 2010 in Microsoft Office.  The mobile device has nothing to do with that.  However, good point!   I tried from my mobile device when I was (absentmindedly) on wifi at home, so of course I couldn't send from the mobile device either!  Works fine on 4G.

    On the residential Spectrum connection:

MS Outlook 2010 client - nope!

    Linux server - nope!

Android device on wifi - nope!

My interrupted connection to mail.twc.com and the ensuing SMTP 421 error doesn't really care which client I'm on, now does it!  So yeah, same as everyone else, issuing EHLO [anything], manually or otherwise, just gets me disconnected on the residential Spectrum connection.

Spoke to a fellow named Eric in escalated support.  He's opened a ticket SCI000000058614 based on the information I sent him:

Thanks dhern! Maybe, just maybe, this might actually get past customer service/help desk to the actual IT staff...then perhaps we have a chance of getting it resolved.

This just started working for me around 11pm CST.  Anybody else having better luck?

They called me yesterday asking for more information (which was already in the ticket).  Didn['t get any updates today, but realized a test message in my outbox was now gone...

My wife's conmuter, when running Outlook 365 on Spectrun from Botkins, OH, generaly everything works - send & receive. As soon as she runs from the Optimum ISP in Yonkers, NY - 421 error. Receive is fine but send will not work. The WEB interface is fine and I can tracert to the mail.twc.com and resolve without a problem. I ran Wireshark and saw the handshaking. I agree with the timing of the beginning of this behavior. She had been emailing from NY area for the past two years without problems until recently.

Started working again (again) yesterday (LA area). Last time I think it worked for a week or so before it died again.
