Why aren't televised shows or event broadcast with a unique code?

When I was based in UK 15 yrs ago Sky TV and other broadcasters identified each show or sporting event with a unique code. When you wanted to record something, eg a sporting event you selected the code in the on screen guide. If the event was moved to another channel, over ran or was delayed the event was still recorded. Because the event or shows code was encoded in the broadcast. Until the DVR received that code it wouldn't record. Unlike US TV Guides where it's time based;. if the event is delayed or moved to another channel you end up recording something totally different. When are the TV Guides going to get into the computer age? I am tired or sitting down to watch an event to find out the DVR recorded horse racing.. or a show revealing the results...or other junk
