Slow Speed

Today I spent over two hours on chat who passed me to three different techs.

My internet speed is about 85mbs (hard wired) when I am paying for 200mbs.

They rebooted the router... I manually unplugged twice.

After two hours the third person wanted to send out a tech to check things out.

BUT, he wanted me to know that there could be a $49 charge for the service call if it was not Spectrum's fault.

You tell me, If I'm getting 85 and they advertise 200 and I'm paying for 200 WHY would it not be Spectrum's fault...

Frustrated

I've been a spectrum customer for MANY years.

They have been out multiple times over those years. Never found wiring problems.

This is this first time I have heard of this charge.

BTW, this is an old TWC account that got upgraded to Spectrum.

The speed with TWC was 70+mbs.

Possible that somehow my speed was never bumped up?

    There are a number of things that could be an issue outside of our lines or equipment. For instance, if say your computer had a bad NIC card, if you (not saying that you have) moved the modem to another room and connected to an outlet you yourself installed. If you owned your own modem and that was found to be at fault.. If there was a problem with your electrical outlet. There are dozens of things that could be at fault.

    We advise this to our customers so that if it is found to be an issue that we did not cause, or is not the fault of Spectrum, our customer would be aware that there could be a charge. The agent was not implying that this is true in your case, this is something that we should be advising people of for every visit that is booked.


    Please let us know how the visits go. If you are still having issues we can dig a bit deeper.

    In any case, besides the long chat time and being passed off 3 times...

    I now believe the main issue is my laptop. 😓

    I took my laptop to my Dad's house where he has spectrum 400mbs.

    He consistently gets about 480.

    My laptop, hardwired into his network, still only gets about 85mbs.

    He says he had a similar problem when he first got spectrum 400.

    Slow speeds that were caused by a setting in the DELL "Killer Control Center"

    that was limiting his network speed.

    My laptop is an older HP Notebook.

    ANY idea if there is similar software on HPs?

    (RealTek PCIe FE Controller 100mbps)

    So yes, I realize now it's never going to get 200 that I have...

    Time to Upgrade!

    I'm not very familiar with HPs. Since its an older model I would look at the NIC card speed. It

    may be just as simple as that.

    How to check network adapter speed using Control Panel

    1. Open Control Panel.
    2. Click on Network and Internet.
    3. Click on Network and Sharing Center.
    4. Click the Change adapter settings in the left pane. Source: Windows Central.
    5. Double-click the network adapter (Ethernet or Wi-Fi). ...
    6. Check the connection speed in the Speed field.

    Does you have a DOCSIS 3 cable modem that supports speeds over 100MBps? I was getting 120Mbps down and when I realized they'd bumped everyone up to 200Mbps I purchased a DOCSIS 3.0 modem and my speeds immediately increased to 220 Mbps down.
