Hisense U8H TV with silver 1060BC3 remote - OK button not working to change TV input

edited December 2022 in TV Equipment Nov 26, 2022

Just purchased a 65" Hisense TV model U8H (65U8H). I'm using it with Spectrum cable/DVR box Arris/Motorola TM1602A DOCSIS 3.0 on its own HDMI input on the TV. This TV was just released a couple of months ago.

I programmed the remote using code 12355 and most everything works. TV turns on/off, volume work, channels etc.

However, I'm having a problem is when I want to change my TV input. I can go through the different inputs but if I want to select one the "OK" button does not work to select it. It worked fine with my old Samsung TV. I tried the other Hisense codes on the Spectrum support site and a few others that I found via a Google search without success. I contacted support and they said to just use TV's remote to select the input. This is a bit of a pain and the remote would have to be readily available all the time. I never had to use my Samsung remote for anything.

Any ideas or do I just have to live with this inconvenience?

To change the input on that TV, you hit the Input button and select. That’s all. No 🆗 involved. That’s according the user manual. Try it without 🆗 and see if it doesn’t stick after a second or two.

HT_Greenfield - The OK and Select are the same button on my remote. The button has OK on top then an underline with Select below.

My bad. If i'd noticed or remembered that, i would've been more clear. I was thinking Select in this case means just navving to the intentional input so it's "highlighted" and then give it a second or two to stick without any more button pushes because that's how it works with my Vizio TV and the user manual for that Hisense TV makes it sound like it's the same deal. It doesn't illustrate or mention any select button, just the verb select.

HT_Greenfield - Really appreciate your response. If I navigate to the input that I want it will not go to that input no matter how long I wait. I assumed that it would work like my old Samsung TV where I would navigate to the input I wanted and then press the OK/Select button. When I press the OK/Select with the Hisense TV it does nothing.

    Hey all,

I will try to do some looking, and hate to sound discouraging, but I found this on Google:

Is Hisense TV a good brand?

Hisense TVs tend to offer great value for their price, so you won't break the bank buying one. They've recently started to add gaming features like variable refresh rate (VRR) support, so they compete with some other brands. However, their TVs can also suffer from quality problems like uniformity and motion issues.Oct 24, 2022

It sounds like this is more of a "budget mode TV." When companies talk about things like "Just starting to add features." that implies to me tech-wise that the brand name is more focused on budget than quality control issues. I sense susceptible to compatibility bugs. The big companies for TV's like Samsung, Sony, Panasonic are well-known around the world. Cable TV remote codes that work with the cable boxes work better to great because they are popular TV brands. Every TV we have had for the last fifteen years has been a Samsung. (#1 brand for popularity.) And every Spectrum remote we have had works right out of the box. In fact, Samsung is the default TV brand setting for many of these CATV remotes..

Interesting in why you would purchase a Hisense TV over another Samsung? It is unfortunate, but some of these lower priced sets are lower priced for a reason. Some of the CATV codes will unfortunately not work. Of course, I grew up in the era where a TV could last for 15-20 years. Planned obsolesce has shortened the life span of some sets to five years or less. We aren't getting the kind of quality to which I was accustomed to in the past.

It looks like unless there is some kind of special code for Input, I will have to agree with the Spectrum rep and say say "Use your Hisence TV. Remote for non CATV programs." Or if the changing of the inputs has/is making you crazy, (and for some tech guys that could.) Return that TV and get a compatible Samsung. It might be like $100-$200 more, but will be of better quality and compatibility with CATV remote functionality. Or else keep the Hisense TV and use the remote that came with your TV for non-cable-TV programing.

Maybe someone else with this brand knows a workaround. But I would not count on this happening. Another question. What did you pay for this TV?

So OK/Select does nothing for the Hisense TV even when the remote is in TV mode i.e. when you preface the button sequence with a TV button push? Do you have to push a Select button on the remote that came with the TV?

To also add to @HT_Greenfield 's question,

Does OK/Sel work for browsing the guide and searching for shows when you are doing traditional CATV browsing, searching, show selection, and viewing? It sounds like it does, but we want to be sure. As I read this, the only issue is that when switching inputs to a non-cable TV, (Non-Spectrum TV function), the Sel/OK button on the Spectrum CATV remote does nothing? I still stand by my comments above about the TV based on years of owning Samsung sets, and a solid understanding of lower-priced brands with regards to compatibility issues.

Never mind my moronic previous question. I believe @Satch is right on. (Although you could try ▶️ in lieu of 🆗/Select just for kicks.)

Satch - thanks for your response.

The reviews on this particular TV were very strong. This Hisense, TCL 65", and LG 65" were the three top mid range TV's in the $1,000-$1,500 range. I agree that these lines were considered to be low end but I did quite a bit of research on them. However, I still might be returning it.

Yes the OK/sel works fine on CATV for doing whatever I need. The only issue is using the OK/sel to select an input and that is the only issue that I am aware of that I am having.

    Thanks for the update @sprill,

Did you try @HT_Greenfield 's suggestion of hitting the right-arrow key instead of OK/Sel for non-Spectrum Input Selections to see if that works? Let us know about that.

Satch - Yes. I tried the right arrow key and every other key on the remote.

Thanks for the update @sprill ,

It sounds like you will have to either live with using the TV provided remote for Input Source changes, or buy a more recognizable name-brand TV.. For my five month old Series 8 Samsung I have to use the remote that comes with the set for all the Apps and any TV picture and sound changes, I am not a fan of these small Smart TV remotes at all, being an old-school CATV guy. It's not that bad once you get used to it.

I keep the Smart TV remote in a cabinet, using it only when needed to prevent clutter on our TV lamp table. What is the main non-Spectrum input device for which you are using your TV remote?

Satch - thanks again for your help. The other inputs are a gaming system and a DVR (which rarely gets used anymore) so living with this one issue should not be too bad.

I'm old school CATV too. Spectrum tells me that I should get used to their streaming and get rid of my cable/DVR box. To me there is no comparison in the ease of use between the two. I use their streaming app in my bedroom daily and although its usable its a pain in my opinion. I love my DVR.

By the way, I also have one of the newer black "Spectrum Guide Remotes". I have the same issue with the OK button on that one. They gave me that one when they were having all kinds of DVR issues maybe two years ago. It didn't help.

    Wow @sprill

Who at Spectrum said to get rid of your DVR and get used to streaming? That's a shock! They make about $15 a month off of DVR service. I know that streaming is the wave of the future, But I hate with a passion the new tiny little Smart TV remotes and everything reliant on Internet. I love DVR! I love the "Big Screen" experience of cable. I love a remote with numbers and functions on the keys that tells you what the buttons do! It's confusing to have to go from app to app to app to get everything you want that is consolidated with one guide and one DVR with cable.

Oh yea, the Clickr Backlite remote is better than the new Spectrum Guide that they give out with World Boxes.

Satch - Had to take my Spectrum box to the store for replacement to ay and the rep at the store tried to talk me into letting him keep my box and just use streaming. They must save more money from streaming. I started a new thread that detail why I return the box today.
