Low Signal and Slow Speeds - Seeking Solutions

First post so bear with me...I had all my thoughts spewing out of me when i started writing this out. So, thank god for the for excellent chatgpt AI tech that is available to us these days. See below for my situation.

I've been experiencing low signal and slower-than-average speeds with my Spectrum 1Gbps download and 40Mbps upload plan. Multiple technicians have confirmed this issue. Here are some details:

  1. Network Setup:
    • I have a Spectrum-leased modem and router.
    • My home is in a densely packed subdivision with multiple Wi-Fi signals, which might be causing interference.
    • I use Wi-Fi pods, but their effectiveness is questionable.
  2. Performance:
    • Ethernet speeds: 450-750 Mbps
    • Wi-Fi speeds: 150-550 Mbps
  3. Potential Issues:
    • Could my house's position in the network be causing low signal?
    • Is the network design, including fiber to the node and existing copper (coax), affecting performance?
    • Are the electronics and terminations in the network sufficient to maintain signal quality?
  4. Equipment Concerns:
    • The Spectrum router has limited configuration options.
    • I am considering purchasing a personal router for better performance and ROI, but compatibility with existing equipment is a concern.
  5. Additional Factors:
    • Home layout and obstructions
    • Other Wi-Fi signals in the area
    • Router's ability to select the best channel

My bill recently increased by $30, and I'm exploring other ISPs, but Spectrum seems to have the best infrastructure for my area. Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time and preemptive thanks to your posting.

Hello and welcome to the Spectrum Community!

I do apologize for the issues you are having with our internet service. I was able to find your account with your community account information. The equipment shows good on this end. Can you try to reset the modem and router by unplugging both of their power cords and the screw in coax cord from the modem for 30 seconds then plug them back in? Then after they come back up do a speed test again wired and wireless and provide the results?

As for the personal router, you connect it to the modem via ethernet, so there isn't a compatability concern so long as it is a standalone router.

Since you would then be using your own router's wifi, you can contact Spectrum to remove the wifi management feature. This will remove a $5 fee from your bills and they would change the bridge mode of their modem/router combo unit to disable onboard wifi and make it run like a standard passthrough modem.

Compatability concerns are really only an issue when it comes to the modems. While technically the only requirement should be the DOCSIS standard the modem supports, they have a short list of modems they officially support for adding to thier network in place of their leased modems as they are models they have tested to perform well enough with specific firmwares they can push to them.

If you were also interested in providing your own modem, the list used to be available at spectrum.net/modems... but for some reason that domain is not loading for me atm. Just gives an error from CloudFront. Could not pull it up in thier android app either. Hopefully this gets resolved soon.
