Strange FTP issue

I just switched back to Spectrum after a year or so away with another provider. I'm not having issues connecting to the Internet, that's definitely NOT the issue. It's a bit deeper than that.

I manage the website for the municipality where we live. Tonight is the first time I needed to make updates since returning to Spectrum. For some reason, FTP is timing out.

The app I use has its own FTP client but since it failed to upload I downloaded & tried a standalone client (FileZilla which I've used frequently in the past) . I get the same issue.

I've verified every aspect of updating the site and it's all exactly the same. I've also tried it on both my desktop and my laptop with the same result

The ONLY thing that has changed is my ISP.

Spectrum isn't blocking FTP is it?

Thanks!

Good evening @Bluzdogs1154 and Welcome to our Community Forums,

Thank you for reaching out to us about the time outs you are noticing when using the FTP client. I am very sorry this is happening. Have you attempted to reset your equipment yet? This can be done by unplugging the cable line, power line, and removing the battery backup if you have one for both the modem and the router for a solid 3-5 minutes. Are you able to try this and let us know if this helps? -Lyn

My modem has always been a "dumb" pass through device... up to my router to manage port traversal.

It is more likely that your connection is getting blocked by security at the other end. Assuming this is a government network, security should be pretty tight.

Could test that theory by trying to connect to a known open FTP site.

Are you trying to direct connect by the default port 21, or did they open a different port? Did they whitelist your new IP address? Or do you need a VPN or new digital certificate installed?

These were common gotchas back when I worked for a software firm... easiest workaround was to use a VPN to connect to their network. That allowed a lot of flexibility because it effectively put me "locally" on one of their network segments… but we had to be mindful of certain potential restrictions they may still have in place.
