Spectrum Business LTE Backup - Some questions
Hi all,
I had a few questions regarding the LTE Backup service provided by Spectrum Business since I don't see these mentioned anywhere online.
1: For the LTE Backup, is it possible to use the supplied Cradlepoint gateway with a proper dual-WAN capable router? For example, the primary WAN would be the connection from the Cable modem, and the Cradlepoint would be connected to the business router's secondary Internet port. With this, the router would be able to identify whether the primary WAN connection is offline using multiple mechanisms (No Link, No WAN IP, cannot reach endpoints on the Internet), and switch to the LTE Backup, which it can monitor as well for potential issues before failing over. I realize the Cradlepoint can do this, but there are other problems with that…
Keep in mind I'm referring to something along the lines of what Ubiquti, Juniper, Cisco/Meraki, Netgate, etc would sell for small business use, not the Spectrum provided router (which is not a business class router IMO).
2: Does the Cradlepoint's WAN port NEED to be connected to the Internet once activated? I've read elsewhere if the Cradlepoint's WAN connection isn't connected, Spectrum receives a notification that the LTE Backup is in use, and a technician may be automatically dispatched to correct a wiring problem with the setup if disconnected for too long. I presume this is because it is a per-GB LTE plan (pooled?) and not something else, just based on the cost.
3: Why not use 5G equipment? LTE is congested in many areas, and might provide a worse experience during an outage.
