Is anyone else getting more spams in their old @roadrunner.com?

Or is it just my e-mail account? It started a few days ago. I rarely use it too. Smiley Sad

This topic came up a while ago. If you google “spam email increase 2018” you will see you are not the only one.  One article I read recently suggested that the death of the adobe flash plugin is making it harder for scammers to attack your web browser so they are going back to the old standby email.

I personally have seen dramatic increases in spam on a couple of my email accounts. A ten to twenty fold increase. The reason it seems to go from nothing to totally out of control is once they get their dirty hands on your email address they just hammer it.  Their thinking is if one is good one thousand is better.

Unfortunately this is a low priority crime. Few of these guys get caught and even fewer get any real punishment.

Many of these just like spam calls.  Probably does not help but use the "report spam" button to report and delete these emails on the webmail page.

Yes.  I have 15 @nc.rr.com accounts.  I only use about 4 of those on a regular basis.   However, I have all of them set up in Outlook to monitor the inbox.   Since late last week,  5 times now, I have gotten the same exact email to all 15 at the same time.  This has never happened before.  The email domain is partially the same in all 15.  The spammer changes the first 4-6 characters of the domain name with random letters and numbers.   Someone is mass spamming the @nc.rr.com email addresses.   Some of these I haven't used in years so I don't think it is on my end.  I contacted Spectrum yesterday and let them know about this.

    I've noticed it too.

And the ONLY people that have my old ca.rr.com mail are the various incarnations of RR, Time Warner, and Spectrum.  Together with this forum.

I haven't given it out anywhere else, ever.

    Cheers.

Exactly. I think this started when we got the new webmail.

We have the same problem...each account we have (5 of them) is receiving the same spam emails regularly and two of these are our children's accounts who have NEVER seen spam until whatever changed/happened in the past month. It's very frustrating; I've been going into webmail and marking everything as spam before downloading to our home computer and even "forwarding as attachment" to [email protected] (not knowing if that's still valid since we're Spectrum now) but someone has clearly found a way to hit every active email for our domain. We've been online for decades and very careful with our email information so have never had more than a few spam emails here and there which makes this newest flooding on a daily basis highly frustrating and annoying. We may finally have to use spam filtering to see if that helps but I much prefer to determine "spam or not" myself since I've had emails I signed up for or wanted in the past errantly marked as spam (in email subject) by Time Warner/Spectrum when they most definitely were not.

Our account has see an increase in spam in just the last two weeks.  We use to only get an occasional spam email and the spam catchers caught them.  Now, we see many more in our inbox.  The "reply to address" is easily recognized as totally fake and thus we don't understand why there are not maked as spam and automatically sent to junk mail.

Members of our household are all simultaneously getting the same spam from .date and .loan domains.

I have had one of my email addresses used for the last 10 years or so and have never had a piece of spam because I have not shared this address with anyone, ever and now all of a sudden these messages appear.

I called tech support and did complain because I can tell the stuff is coming from Spectrum but apparently they are not filtering the TLD's spewing this junk. I hope somebody pays attention to this issue.

I am! I have 2 email addresses on my account. One of them I use for many things. But the other is only used for 2 bank accounts online and 1 credit card. Suddenly at the start of the year I began to receive spam that I never did before. Sometimes up to 7 or 8 per day. At first I thought it was after ordering goods from a new website -  that maybe they sold my email address. But then, as mentioned, I realized it was happening to the other email as well. I never use it anywhere online.

I have seen that Spectrum in the past has blamed the email utility that people use to download emails to their computer. But these spam emails are in the inbox of the Spectrum webmail site. They are not going to the spam folder. And honestly, I used to check that folder periodically to be sure something legitmate didn't end up there. And don't recall seeing this much previously.

I believe it started shortly after the Jan. 1, 2019. It's like they turned off a filter on their end around that time.

I noticed the webmail doesn't seem to catch any spams too! I think it is broken! Smiley Sad

I have also been getting spam emails to each of my 4 roadrunner email addresses the last few weeks. 1 account is used frequently and usually gets some spam. 1 address is used for family and friends and rarely got spam. The other 2 addresses were set up for a specific purpose,  and NEVER got any spam.  Now ALL of them get the same spam. So what's up Spectrum? Why are ALL our email addresses now vulnerable?

I called customer service. A supervisor suggested I go to the old mail domain "mail.twc.com" and log in there, which I did. In that domain there is a "Report SPAM" button at the top which you can use to report checked emails. He hoped that might reset a broken filter, we will see.

I’ve been getting them more frequently too at my @Austin.rr.com address. Started more frequently around Christmas time. Subjects ranged from yummy gummys, CBD Oil, loans, warranty, Santa, Keto Diet, blood pressure, etc.

I tried to use the filter that if a sender contained the names they commonly use then it would delete the email but doesn’t work well.

These emails would usually be grouped together but appear they are sent within an hour of each other.

Mine started on January 12th with all three accounts on kc.rr.com getting at least 2 identical spams per day.  Apparently, Spectrum has sold, or given away all the valid email addressed on roadrunner.  Also, trying to get removed from the list that the email links to does not work.

Or even hacked as shown in https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r32262320- post. BTW, don't bother to unsubscribe from those unexpected random spams since that would confirm your e-mail addresses are valid to spammers to reuse. Smiley Sad Only do that if you DID sign up on that mailing list like Charter's (e.g., this forum thread that I subscribed to).

Jan 2019 - HIGH levels of SPAM on Spectrum EMAIL.

I recently started using my Spectrum/Roadrunner(@tx.rr.com) email address.
About 2-3 weeks ago (Jan 2019) I started receiving blatant spam emails in my INBOX and none in the spam folder.

NOTE: My settings are enabled to move SPAM to the SPAM FOLDER!

Over this time I have tried marking the emails as SPAM but that doesn't have any effect. Nothing makes it into the spam folder which is *always* empty!

Initially, I tried blocking the Sender/Domains WHICH DOES NOT WORK because the domains are fake and are PREPENDED with varying characters. I have included some of the fake domains below that I have "blocked", as an example.

In the sample below, yaliyam.loan is prepended with 5 varing characters to create a new fake domain with a possible new TLD.

Spectrums awful email software does not support wildcards for domain blocks!!

So I can't block it with:
    @*yaliyam.loan or @*yaliyam.science OR
    *yaliyam.loan or *yaliyam.science

Spectrum domain blocking settings only allow a full domain with no wildcards e.g.
    5fvytyaliyam.loan
    bqzzsyaliyam.loan

    EXAMPLE of FAKE DOMAINS
    ------------------------------------------------
    5fvytyaliyam.loan
    bqzzsyaliyam.loan
    muxwxyaliyam.loan
    ncrcxyaliyam.loan
    dic1wgifttrack.trade
    hijlygifttrack.trade
    mgqagtrackinfo.science
    msizeyaliyam.science

I called support and got a nice polite person but could not understand this and kept prattling on about how to stay safe on the internet and telling me to use the "block" feature and not the "Report Spam"!!

After reading this thread from users in kc.rr.com, nc.rr.com,ca.rr.com, tx.rr.com domains, it sounds like this is pretty widespread.  I wonder if Spectrum/Roadrunner has been hacked and all email addresses stolen.

I am hoping that someone at Spectrum sees these posts and escalates this up the chain to their IT team.

Yes! I'm glad I'm not alone. I was fortunate to only ever get maybe 1 spam email a year before but now I get several a day and it also all started like 2 weeks ago. I use the rr.com email for work and since I use an alternate app for it, I have to constantly log into webmail to "block" and "report spam".

Blocking and report spam doesn't work for me. Blocking won't work because the email addresses are random. Smiley Sad

UPDATE:  Fake domains  now only .COM ?

Over the past two days, I have noticed that TLD in spam emails seems to moved exclusively to .COM from  .loan, .finance, .science etc.  See screenshot.

I have also noticed that the volume of spam seems to have dropped a bit.

    Can someone else confirm?

Wow. No spams for over a day in mine. Hmm! Maybe pure luck on my side? I didn't change anything.

I went two days with no spam in all the email boxes, but then this morning at 9:53, spam hit all of them again.  Thought it was fixed.  Oh well.

Still empty in my inbox so far, but finally its junk folder caught a real spam e-mail (ADT alarm).

I agree, it has definitely gotten better but NOT completely fixed.

I received only one  from  a  bogus domain ( .science)  today  2/1/19 and two yesterday.

However,  last week and the week before, I was getting up to 20 per day.

I only had seen that spam filter worked with ONE spam e-mail ever so far. All the rest were in my inbox. Speaking of inbox, I got one spam in it since my last post in this forum thread. Smiley Sad

I have never gotten spam on any roadrunner address I have except one that got hacked years ago that I don't use anymore. Like everyone else here, I have noticed the same increase in spam since the beginning of January: Same spam sent to several roadrunner addresses that I have had forever, including two I have never ever used, as well as my master account, which had only received emails from Time Warner in the past but has never been used to send anything.  For years I would only get TWC messages on the master account.  Now, since Spectrum got involved, I get these provider messages randomly to all my accounts (except one used by my spouse).  These are now  the very same addresses that are now receiving all the spam. Notably my spouse has not gotten any of the recent spam.  Most of these roadrunner addresses have never been installed on any device, only accessed thru webmail, so I have to conclude that the spammers didn't get these address from me.  They had to come from Spectrum, either a direct hack or a hack of one of the companies Spectrum thought wise to release the information to. Another curious thing I have noted about the spam is that it is addressed to the various email addresses but also includes 5 digit number followed by a semi-colon and another 3 digit number when viewed in my email client (OE) and just is addressed to a 5 digit number when viewed via Spectrum webmail.

As a test, I added a new roadrunner email address last week.  So far, no spam has gone to that address.

Another interesting thing to me is that there has been NO COMMENT from any of the Spectrum contacts on this forum, even though they continue to comment on other threads on the forum.

Needless to say, I am not very happy with Spectrum for this.  I dumped their phone and tv.  Looks like I will have to move my email to one of the big three and find a new internet provider.

Now, I have two spam e-mails and one legit e-mail from [email protected] ("Reminder: Updates to your Spectrum Webmail") in my inbox. No caught spams into Junk Mail folder.
