Down-Converting All Channels to 720p?

I saw at this link that all channels (including those that are supposed to be 1080i) are being down-converted to 720p resolution:
I notice this in Los Angeles, as well. Why is this happening? What prompted this nonsense? What is there to gain by this drivel? Please undo what you did and go back to carrying all HD channels in their native resolution.

Hi Joey,
I don't know why they would be doing that. Maybe to save bandwidth? When did this start happening? Maybe the think the average customer would not care? Is it the same in LA for you as well with all channels or some channels? I wonder if this is on the XUMO streaming boxes as well?
Best resolution is still directly through the TV.

I’m not sure when this started. It’s the case with all channels.

In with MPEG-4 Level 3.2 and out with MPEG-2 MP@HL for better or for worse, i guess.

P.S: Such transcoding is not all "Down-Converting" per se; certainly not the de-interlacing aspect of it for 60 fps instead of 30. In any case, it is not for no reason that so many channels originate in 720p in the first place including everything Disney, everything FOX and most sports channels and then some.
