Has there been an enhancement to the Cloud DVR when fast forwarding a recording?

I use the Cloud DVR on my Samsung smart TV's. Until recently, when fast forwarding a recording, all I could see on the timeline was the number of minutes/seconds into the recording (44:12 would indicate that I was currently 44 minutes and 12 seconds into the recording) and I could use this to fast forward for the approximate time I thought the commercial break would last. There was no way to view the actual video of the program while fast forwarding, so I couldn't see when the program resumed.

However, in the past few days, the fast forward function now shows the video much like traditional DVR's and streaming services like Netflix. This is much better. Is this an actual enhancement to the Cloud DVR service, or is this change due to something else (like my TV itself?)

    Welcome!

No, this would be an update to Spectrum's cloud DVR service. Note that when roll-outs for CATV/streaming services hit, you would get the updates when they come to your market. The type of TV would not effect these updates.

The same is true with traditional DVR services or program guide updates.

Satch, could you clarify your response? My question was regarding the Cloud DVR service. So has such an update to the fast forward function been added? You said:

"Note that when roll-outs for CATV/streaming services hit, you would get the updates when they come to your market"

It appears that is what might have happened in my case but my question was not only as to whether Spectrum had updated the functionality of the Cloud DVR service but also whether or not Spectrum announces these updates in some way, or do they just assume that the users will notice?

    Hello @tgordon2;

The changes you saw were likely related to an update to the Spectrum TV app. The app is update frequently to fix bugs with the app and we generally do not get specific updates to the app. We do get updates to major changes to the app but we did not receive notification of this specific update.

This "video preview tiles" function during the FF/REW function of CloudDVR is very useful, if only it worked properly. In my observation (which is just the past four days, which is how long I've owned three of these Xumos and subscribed to CloudDVR) the preview thumbnails DO NOT MATCH THE TIME CODE.

I agree that in theory it is a very useful tool when wanting to skip past a commercial pod, e.g. during a "break in the action" between innings or during a pitcher change within a baseball game. These breaks typically are 2-4 minutes in length. So you'd expect the preview tiles to show the commercial until the time code is a few minutes on, at which time the tiles would now show the ball game.

However my observation is that the preview tiles are incorrectly showing the ball game prematurely. In fact I'm not convinced they're coming from "advance video", and it might even be coming from "previous video". I don't know if the Spectrum programmers did this intentionally so that when you push PLAY prematurely as a result you will actually still be looking at commercials!!

Seems sinister to imagine this was intentional but if this was not the intent then they are simply not great programmers, because the preview tiles DO NOT MATCH REALITY!!

Perhaps it's because I push the "right arrow" on the remote more than once (which produces is the default skip speed of 3-seconds per skip), so that it now is either 2x or 3x. Maybe it would work properly if only 1x, but it certainly is NOT working correctly at 2x or 3x.

So I am forced to keep my eye on the timecode at 2x or 3x. The video tiles are definitely incorrect.

    Hopefully they will fix this.

    DSperber,

I wasn't sure how to do an actual reply in this forum so I'm manually inputting your id. You seem to be confirming what Edward T said (that Spectrum has indeed added this feature to the Cloud DVR).

And I agree with your analysis that if the user is fast forwarding at 2-3 times the normal speed, the video previews are not reliable, but the regular fast forward speed is pretty accurate. What I have done when it's a normal commercial break (3-5 minutes) Is to use the accelerated FF for a couple of minutes and then go back to the normal FF. I agree that they need to correct this. But I still don't understand why they didn't announce this enhancement on the Spectrum web site or in the My Spectrum app.
