Are you happy with your Xumo remote control?

In an effort to save money when my My Spectrum promotional discounts dropped significantly, I turned in my cable box/recorder in order to use their Xumo box/iCloud recorder.  According to a  customer service rep on the phone, I have the newest box/remote.  There are so many features on the cable box remote that are not on the Xumo remote like a 15 second rewind, last channel, and guide button. It took a while to get used to it but I’ve finally gotten the hang of it and it’s not too bad. My Huge Complaint is whether I’m watching live TV or a recorded show, it’s very difficult to fast forward or rewind to the right spot. There’s a PIP box that shows you the scene you are moving to, but it is usually wrong. It’s ridiculously time-consuming.

Unfortunately the xumo device is not good. With the switch from cable to streaming, it seems Spectrum realized there needs to be a replacement for the set-top box that allows users to navigate the channel offerings. A smart TV or Apple TV is okay for this, however they lack the keypad with numbers that we used to use to go to our favorite channels. That's been replaced by pretty good voice recognition so you can just tell the remote what channel or streaming service to play. The Xumo remote is actually very good about responding to voice commands. Our problem was the Xumo box kept failing. After a few weeks it started skipping and losing connection to wifi then shutting down for no reason. Got a replacement from Spectrum and that one gave a weird error on setup then froze and wouldn't start again. Spectrum is trying its best to offer a device to replace the set-top box but with streaming, that requires a pretty robust device like a Roku or Apple TV and the Xumo doesn't look like it's good enough quality. The remote is fantastic, though — wish it was as good as the box.

    Hello @KnottaTechie;

Thank you for the feedback on the Xumo remote and the fast forwarding feature. I will pass on your feedback to management to look into changing those features in the future.

    Hello @dweezilzappos'

Welcome to the Community Forums. I can understand the frustration of the Xumo not working correctly for you. You can visit the following site for some troubleshooting suggestions for the Xumo. https://www.spectrum.net/support/tv/xumo-stream-box-device-troubleshooting I would suggest you do a factory reset of the Xumo to see if it helps.

    Hello!

I am holding on to my DVR and not going to XUMO for as long as possible! Not only because I live with an elderly person who hates change, the XUMO doesn't cut for me. Probably being an old school cable guy since 1985 is influencing my decision as well as the excellent feedback above The following are XUMO's remaining problems:

1.) No last channel recall button.

2.) The guide is not anywhere near as nice as on the Spectrum Guide boxes.

3.) Loss of Caller ID on landline phone.

4.) Too many XUMO reliability problems. If you have the slightest problem with Internet, Xumos are affected by this is a negative way.

Newer does not always mean better, and can often mean worse.

The only thing good about XUMO is that all the channels and streaming apps are in one place. But the quality of the service, despite getting better from first releases has a long way to get up to the levels of the standard boxes and DVR's.

I give the XUMO's a 5/10. I give the traditional DVR's an 8.5/10. What good is saving money on hardware if the quality of the experience goes down because of that?

We’ve had the XUMO box one week. Had to reset it 4 different times. It hesitates all the time. Mega problems. Went to do a simple task like shutting the tv off and it didn’t recognize the task. Had to use Sony tv remote, not XUMO remote to shut it off. Spectrum just plays down all these problems. Sounds like they were sold a bill of goods with XUMO. Spectrum coming out tomorrow. We shall see………..

Just switched from cable box. Things we miss with xumo.

    No last channel

Guide not as easy to navigate

    No tv zoom option

No easy way to see recorded list or scheduled list

Most ridiculous Spectrum offering yet. I’m switching back from Xumo to the old dvr box tomorrow. So much is missing from Xumo’s remote (backlighting, channel up/down, last channel, favorite channels, cannot see full show info), and the fast-forward and rewind is out of whack - crazy that it’s actually LESS annoying to have to deal with commercials than it is to get the fast-forward and rewind to stop at the right spot! And multiple steps with Xumo when the old drv remote could do it with one button! Deleting multiple saved shows at one time from the drv is not possible - shows must be deleted one by one. Also, the text is so small on the screen that I actually have to get closer to the tv to read everything!

    This is NOT progress.

I have to agree with @ZumoNoNo

All his/her points are valid. Wow! I did not know you can't do multiple show deletions! That's crazy! The older DVR boxes are so much better to navigate, and the guide on the older DVR's is more feature-rich. I think Spectrum/Comcast. (They worked together to create this box,) dropped the ball on this hardware.

PS. There is a way to enlarge the onscreen menus at least according to Google Search:

    To enlarge menus on XUMO,

go to Settings > Picture and sound > Zoom settings to adjust the zoom level. You can also use the Accessibility menu to enable features like Voice Guidance or Magnify text, which enlarges text in a highlighted window.

     Using Picture and sound settings

    1. Press the Settings icon on your remote or navigate to it on the home screen.
    2. Select Picture and sound.
    3. Choose Zoom settings.
    4. Adjust the settings as needed to enlarge the picture or menus.

For anyone looking for “last channel” functionality using Xumo, press the down key (6 O Clock position) in the outer circular area of your remote and it will pop up a menu with last channels. You can then select it from there. It’s 2 clicks vs 1 but it can be advantageous if you’re flipping between more than 2 channels.
