My email has been hacked

Hello,
Last week Thursday, my email got hacked. This is the same email I have had with Spectrum (and Time Warner before that), it was one of the original Road Runner email addresses.

Additionally, the hacker changed my Microsoft account, inserting their email address so any reset codes get sent to them, instead of my email.

My questions: how do I correct this and regain control of my email address, how can I fix the Microsoft account thing, and how can I reset my IMAP password for email delivery?

I mainly use iOS, but also have a laptop.

Thank you for any help or direction you all can provide!

TK

Hello and welcome to the Community Forums @KeukaGuy !

We're sorry to hear of the issues you're facing with the recent hacks. For things we do just want to first advise that for the Microsoft side of things, you'll need to contact Microsoft directly as we're not able to assist or advise on their products. It's best to do this as soon as possible to get things at least stopped from further disruption.

For our side of things, we can take steps to help with our legacy RR email. Due to the info we'll be discussing, as well as the need to authenticate things for us to get this underway, would it be ok if we bring this conversation to a private message?

Yes, of course. How do I do that?

I'm sorry, we're actually not able to reset passwords from our end so a private message won't be necessary. You can reset it using the Forgot Username or Password? option at Spectrum.net.

    @KeukaGuy

Re-reading your post, it does not sound like your Spectrum email was hacked, rather that your Microsoft account was hacked that uses your Spectrum email for notifications. This is called spoofing or ATO (account take over).

Are you able to change your Spectrum / legacy TWC email password and access email otherwise? (as mentioned above by @William_M)

For your Microsoft account, you will need to contact Microsoft and make them aware your notification email was changed. If you have a recovery email or other notification set up, you can use that for authentication instead of your email. Once you can access your Microsoft account, you can change it back to the original email or add a different email. You may need to contact Microsoft support directly for assistance.

Goes without saying, you will also want to change any passwords and monitor any credit cards that may be associated with your Microsoft account. I've included a link on Account Security that may be helpful.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for the great info. Can you tell me how to change my email password without using my original email? I have had to reset passwords in the past, but I was able to get reset codes sent to my email to execute the reset. I can't do that now because my legacy email has been taken over.

Sure thing. Legacy email was merged with Spectrum email and is all located at spectrum.net. Just log in to spectrum.net using the email you want to access. Instead of entering the password, you can select "forgot password" and you be taken to the password reset. You should have a recovery email set up that is different from the Legacy (**.rr.com) email. If you are able to access email directly through the portal, then you can also go to settings > account info and change your password from there, as in the example below.
