Spectrum tv app not available on older LG tv’s

I understand spectrum tv app is only available on lg tv models 2021 and newer. When will the app be supported on older smart tv models like 2017?

    Hello @Kart2,

Unfortunately, most app manufactures for the Smart TV's only provide updates going back 3-5 years from the current year because the changes in the app technology often aren't compatible with older model Smart TV's.

However, older TV's can get a Roku streaming box or stick, connect it to their Smart TV's and the Spectrum TV app will be offered on that device.

Every other app manufacturer supports older tv models except for spectrum

I'd gage my expectations according to when an app for any given platform is launched in the first place. E.g. Stremio for LG TV was launched last year and doesn't support any models older than model year 2020. Spectrum TV and Xbox for LG TV were both launched within the past month or so and, while Spectrum TV supports models of model year 2021 and later, Xbox's currency cutoff is 2022!

P.S.: Initial-launch backward-compatibility is one thing and ongoing backward-compatibility in the by and by is another. The latter isn't limited by the former and typically accrues to more like eight or nine years as far as i'm concerned.

P.P.S.: To be more clear, i'm not saying that the model-year backward-compatibility of such of an app will ever go farther back than that of initial launch, just that the model-year cutoff cycle is typically eight or nine years auld lang syne.

Apple TV, Amazon prime, Netflix, max, Disney+ and every other popular app I know supports older lg tv models except for spectrum tv. If spectrum claims to go where the customers are they should make the app available to everyone not just a very few.

    I agree @Kart2,

Spectrum should write a program for its Spectrum app and retain support on it for older Smart TV's. The main thing that this does, is that it makes the Spectrum app more accessible to Spectrum TV customers with older Smart TV models. However, in the meantime, get a Rocku box or stick and install it on your older TV so that you can take advantage of the Spectrum app features on your older set.

Bear in mind that the app is also dependent on the TV manufacturer's software and firmware. If LG changes either of those and doesn't support older TVs, Spectrum might have no say in the process. Apple TV, Amazon prime, Netflix, Max, Disney+, etc. for the most part are not streaming live TV like Spectrum does.

Remember that the TV manufacturers business is to sell new TVs and they more than likely play the "planned obsolescence" game.

I checked with LG they are saying it’s in spectrum’s hands to support older models.

    Guys,

Hypothetically speaking do you believe that ten years from a release date is a realistic support time frame for the older TV's to be supported? Or is that too long, and why do you think that? If LG makes a TV in 2017, I think that customers like @Kart2 should have ten years of support until 2027 for the apps to work on his set.

They can't do it forever of course, because that is unrealistic. But I learned, lets take Samsung. Samsung says that they will only release updates for their apps for three years from the purchase of a TV! That's way too short of a window! I got my Samsung TV 50" last year (2024) I have a Best Buy Geek Squad extended warranty on that set for five years, I was that this five years is AFTER the one year warranty expires in July 2025 from Samsung, Everybody should get some type of advanced warranty plan for their electronics. One year is a joke and not enough. Three years is next to nothing. Five years is barely tolerable. Maybe there should be a range of five years to ten years.

In the above with the Samsung apps for Smart TV's this does not mean that the apps will stop working after three years, but that no more feature updates will be electronically uploaded to the device after the third year. With today's economy in shambles and people on fixed incomes, many should expect a minimum of five years for updates to the electronics to be released. I am not surprised that LG passed the buck to Spectrum, shifting responsibility for their app to be supported by older sets. That's a common practice. In any event, @Kart2 should get a Rocku box or stick. Right now, outside of buying a new TV, it's the only way for him to use the Spectrum app on his set.

Pre-2018 models of that platform seem to have evolved into somewhat of a dark horse as the years have gone by is all i can figure:

Thus can't blame any TV provider diligently launching an app for that platform now of days for not wasting their time trying to support pre-2018 models thereof but that's just me. I'm an unfrozen caveman.

again if you claim to go where customers are you need to support all models. If every other app creator can support older models so can spectrum.

    Kart2,

How many years back would you consider a realistic amount of time to support the Spectrum app on older sets?

    at least 10 years.

    @Kart2

I agree with you about the 10 years of support. It's hard for people to buy new things in today's economy due to financial stress.
