Ping issues since speed upgrade

Options

Ever since my speed was upgraded a month or so ago from 10mbps upload to 21mbps, if anyone on my network is uploading something, any online game becomes unusable from latency fluctuation. This wasn't an issue before the upgrade. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Good afternoon & welcome @dknelson,

A change in service speed shouldn't impact performance aside from increased bandwidth. Depending on what or how much they're uploading, this can reduce performance on other connected devices if available bandwidth is being used already.

Are you connecting through your own router or directly to the modem? If using a router, hardwired to the device or wireless? To start, you can reboot both the modem and router by removing power and coax from the modem and power from the router for at least 30 seconds before reconnecting.

@Mo_S I have tried restarting as you suggested, it doesn't seem to have changed anything, unfortunately. I am using a router, with the computer having latency issues being hardwired and the computer uploading a file being wireless. The file upload maxes out at 3 Mbps, and the computer playing a game maxes out at about 100 kbps upload network usage while the problem is happening. I don't believe the router is the issue as it hasn't had an update since well before the problem started, but I could try hard-wiring both computers to the modem if you think the router might be the culprit.

@dknelson We would recommend bypassing your personal router and connecting one device directly to our modem to just rule out the router as the cause of the concern. You can also try to swap out the Ethernet cable you are using. This can sometimes cause concerns. ~Lyn

@Lyn_T It still happens when connected directly to the modem with a new cat 5e cable. Ping when there wasn't an upload in progress was about 10 lower than with the router, but that was the only noticeable change.

Hey @dknelson, unfortunately if the issue doesn't happen when connected directly to the modem that points to an issue with the router which is your personal equipment. I'd recommend contacting the router manufacturer; They may be able to help you make some adjustments, such as to the routers QOS settings which helps determine which data is prioritized.
