Odd Video Issue with Spectrum Injected Commercials

For a number of years I have noticed an odd video issue with commercials that appear to be injected by my local Spectrum office. The commercials are found on many national feeds but appear to be injected locally as many are Spectrum or local commercials. They exhibit extensive combing artifacts. This can be seen on vertical lines of objects on the screen as short, jagged, offset, horizontal lines and looks horrible. No other video exhibits this issue. I have selected all of the video output options for my STB with no change. I suspect this is a problem with settings in the local Spectrum equipment that inject these commercials. It can be created when interlaced video is converted to progressive video and the first field is incorrectly selected. Does anyone else notice this or is it an issue to me locally, and most importantly, who do I contact to report it? Here's an example of combing. Thanks

    Good morning @raouliii!

I would be careful adjusting your STB equipment on these commercials, as you don;t want a setting to be changed that could interfere with the quality content of main programing. On what channel(s) does this occur? Is this a Spectrum owned channel like Spectrum News 1? or do these local commercials appear on any network? What products do they promote?

I suspect that this is a problem with local studio equipment that is producing these commercials. I think this is a transmitting problem, not a STB receiver issue. For further investigation by Spectrum, provide these things:

1.) Your state, city, and zip code.

2.) The channel(s) on which the commercials with the terrible lines appear. (Describe name of the product or service promoted.)

3.) Are the lines constant in the above conditions? Do they get worse or better during a specific time? Or are they always there distorting the picture?

4.) Does rebooting the equipment, (STB and modem) make a difference? Try a reboot of those things if you have not done so for a long time.

5.) Does watching the content on different equipment, say your PC or the Spectrum App produce the same result with the line problems on local commercials?

Answer the above questions in a report back to us. Thanks!

ESPN is one example but every channel that commercials are injected locally

    Constant during these commercials

    Always the same

    Reboot does nothing

I only watch using the STB

I'm sure this is a problem associated with the local office, if that is where local and spectrum commercials are injected. I would guess there is an incorrect setting associated with a deinterlacing process.

    Just curious …

    1. ESPN channel 31 or ESPN channel 808 or both or what?
    2. All commercials on ESPN or just some or what?
    3. Which STB? πŸ”— https://www.spectrum.net/support/tv/digital-receiver-cable-box
    4. Which program guide? πŸ”— https://www.spectrum.net/support/tv/which-guide-do-i-have

    Good Morning @HT_Greenfield!

User said that all Spectrum local commercials have this interlacing problem regardless of channel. It seems that ESPN is the one injecting local content most often. National commercial feeds are not a factor as I understand. This is not a box issue.

Whoever is responsible for local Spectrum commercial programing in Louisiana, Hammond, 70403 needs to correct those local Spectrum commercial feeds that seem to show a video interlacing problem. Perhaps that division's office needs to switch to national commercial contest until the problem is fixed.

Correction: Above should read "content" not "contest."

    Hey Everyone,

I have been researching this topic online the original poster of this thread, @raouliii should call Spectrum Customer Care on their bill and ask whom to contact regarding a problem with Spectrum Commercials on local programing OP should explain the interlacing lines showing up on local Spectrum Commercials, and only on Spectrum local commercials, emphasizing that national commercials and all other programs have no issues. OP can mention that local Spectrum Commercials on ESPN are an example of the local Spectrum Commercials interlacing issue.

The CSR might still want to send out a tech to do a signal route trace just to rule things out or start to isolate from where the problem is originating. I would let them do that because as they investigate they can see if this is something in the node locally or further along the chain. There can be like 600-800 houses in a single node. I would recommend letting them do that. You don't have to bring up a service call to the rep, but if he/she wants to set up a service all let them do that.

The person or department to whom they should report the local Spectrum Commercial interlacing program to, would be Spectrum's Community Relations Manager or the Spectrum's Operations Director for Hammond, Louisiana.

PS. If Spectrum Customer Care wants to send out a tech, take a picture of the local Spectrum commercial lines/interlacing problem, or make a copy of the photo in this thread. Give the copy of that photo to your tech to assist in his/her investigation of this issue.

@raouliii : Since i now realize that the exemplary image you shared was found on the Internet, i have to agree with Satch that a tech house-call, so somebody from your local Spectrum field office can see what it looks like right there in real time, would be most helpful at this point.
