Why did a movie I was watching suddenly change to another movie?

I was watching this morning on FXM and about a half hour into it, it changed to another movie already in progress. Changing the channel and returning to FXM didn't make it return to the original movie. I have a traditional cable receiver - not streaming.

    Hello @deedleann824,

That's hard to say, were you watching a recorded movie on DVR playback? Live TV? Or a movie on Demand? Do you remember if you paused the movie with in that half hour time frame, What time of the day or night was this?

What does happen is if you are watching On Demand and than pause On Demand, it will kick you back to the guide or to live TV after a pause of about five minutes. I seem to recall that you don't use On Demand. It could be a lot of things:

If watching live TV, it could be a station change in programing, where as everyone watching that movie, regardless of provider was affected.

If could be a night time "glitch."

Without experiencing this in a real time environment this is too hard to say what could have happened. Can you tell is the name of the movie you were watching, and the movie that came after that half hour. Also the time of day or night.

All I can say is, if your box did something than I am going with a glitch. If there were no error messages on the screen and some other movie just came on, my guess is this was a station thing. Did the new movie start after a commercial, or was it during the movie you were first watching?

I was watching regular cable TV, not On Demand, DVR or streaming. Happened about 3:30 am. The movie suddenly changed from "How Green Was My Valley" (not at a commercial break - FXM doesn't have those during a movie) to "The King and I" which also was in progress (didn't start at the beginning).

    Hello @deedleann824,

I researched this. It seemed to be a programing glitch late at night with the station. In extremely isolated instances programing may not be the same between the guide and the station, or the network may make last minute changes during overnight hours. 2am-6am is considered the time range of lowest viewership. Something happened during that time window.

The monthly service vendor in this case, Spectrum has no control over programing content. That rests with the station owners. I looked at FXM's schedule, did not even see "How Green Was My Valley." listed. But "The King and I" Is showing this month. All I could suggest is to search the guide for another time, "How Green Was My Valley" is playing and try to watch it then. If you have a DVR box you can record it.

Spectrum only provides the equipment, the lines, and the signals. They will forward programing requests to networks when it comes time for channel negotiations and renegotiations. But the stations themselves control all of the programing.

Heard that and i do see where "How Green Was My Valley" was supposed to have aired on linear FXM in the time-frame cited with more airings coming up soon as in e.g. March 11th, 15th & 17th.

"The King and I" was not scheduled to air in that time-frame but i see where FXM has airings of it coming up soon as in on March 7th (very soon!) & 8th.

If the same thing happens again the next time then i would guess that the source video file was inadvertently cross-compiled per se but, in any case, i agree with Satch that such things are pretty much on the origination distributors rather than on any re-distributors.

Darn if I couldn't see that movie again! "HGWMV" was aired this morning (March 11) on FXM. About an hour into it, the screen just went black and a few moments later a message popped up - "FXM is currently unavailable. Please try again later." I waited about 5 minutes and tried that channel again. There was a picture, but it was frozen, then I saw the pop-up message again.

    Good Afternoon @deedleann824,

Here is the full "How Green Was My Valley." movie on YouTube which should solve this once and for all! You can move the slider to the area of the film that you missed:

I could suggest issues to investigate the loss of signal at night, but the problem is that by contracting Spectrum, they will probably want to send out a tech and change something, and your past post history shows that you don't want that.

If this keeps happening night after night after night after night when you try to watch something, which seems to be between the 2am-5am hours it will be a tough decision to make. Whether to call or live with this. Does your box do this "Channel not Available during the day, or is it only late at night between the hours indicated above?

I would like you to run a test for the community please. Can you watch something on FXM for at least an hour during the day and report back if the channel or box does anything strange during that time? The programing you select can be anything at all. Just watch anything on FXM for at least one hour to ninety minutes during the day. and report back on how that went. Make a note of the time you watched this test programing.

Today it was during the day. The movie was on the scheduled from 10:40am and to 12:40 pm.

Thanks for the complete movie. It's going to be aired again on Sunday morning from 3 to 5 am. Maybe I will be awake then.

    Hello @deedleann824;

Your cable box is one of the older ones that we provided and does not run our current software. If you continue to see issues with the channel changing all of a sudden then we may need to switch to one of our newer cable boxes. We can also get a technician out to check for any potential signal issues that could be causing it.

Thanks, I'll let you know. BTW - I probably have an older receiver because my TV doesn't have an HDMI port - only coax.

    Thanks for the updates @deedleann824

When you tech comes out, I would recommend tuning to your FXM channel so that he/she can take a signal reading off of that channel. Try not to reboot anything (no box or Internet equipment) for six hours before your tech's arrival so that he/she can see any build up of static or noise on the lines. Your signals have to be good first. A new box won't fix bad signals.

I remember that your TV is very old and does not support HDMI. The cable boxes that run the newer software will require an HDMI equipped TV. You should really look for a new HD TV. Note that an HDMI cable does not come with the new TV so you should buy an HDMI cable. Go to Amazon.con and I would check out TV brands Samsung and Hisense. Remember that TV's that are HD are screen-measured diagonally.

I guarantee that you will not get a great picture with a Coax cable with Spectrum's newer boxes because the technology has changed so much. Your TV is too old to give you the type of amazing picture quality that the new TV's with HDMI support and the newer boxes have. Since you have an older TV, your tech may be able to get you the older box that you have now. But as a tech guy, trust me, you are missing out on a true HD experience until you get a new HDMI ready TV and HDMI cable. I would go to Amazon and look at HD sets from Samsung and Hisense. You can order an HDMI cable from Amazon for $15

The true i HD experience with HDMI cable in a new HD set is incredible! The clarity is so sharp and life-like you will feel like the people are in the room with you. We can also help with setting up your new TV and picture preferences.

Here is a look at Samsung TV's from Amazon: (Don't get a Refurbished model)

And here are some HDMI cables, which are a prerequisite for today's modern TV's and modern cable boxes:

You want one that says HDMI 2.1

PS With Spectrum cable, you will still be doing everything from the Spectrum provided remote control that they will give you with the new box. For the TV's they have Geek Squad's and extended warranty plans when you purchase the set. I signed up for a five year plan from Best Buy when I got my Samsung 50" TV about two years ago. Amazon will have similar extended warranties, which I recommend, That way, with an extended warranty if anything goes wrong within the plan, a Geek Squad comes out and repairs or replaces the set for free.
