sporadic connections from Thunderbird to tx.rr.com account
I have an account with the tx.rr.com address. I use Thunderbird to view and send. the email account is set up as POP3 in Thunderbird. It has worked well until the last couple weeks when I have gotten sporadic errors from Thunderbird saying something like "could not connect to server mail.twc.com; the connection was refused." then a few minutes later it works. Sometimes this happens on the Send and sometimes on the Receive.. I believe the account is set up correctly and I never have an issue through webmail. It is annoying. Any suggestions?

Hello @Bigtee49;
I can understand the frustration with the server being intermittent. We do not currently have an open issue for the POP3 server but we are aware of a similar issue with our webmail platform. It is possible that it is related to it. We can escalate further but we need to escalate when the problem is currently affecting you. If you can reach out to us when the issue happens then we can escalate the issue so our engineers can see what is happening while it is currently occurring. I would also recommend testing our webmail at the time you see the issue with the POP3 server to see if the same thing is happening. You can also try temporarily disabling your firewall on your computer to see if there is a difference. Make sure to reenable it after you are done testing.

I have set thunderbird.exe to "allowed" in Bitdefender firewall for a couple weeks now and it doesn't make any difference.
The problem occurs randomly and then a few minutes later is gone. I
check webmail every morning through a browser on an Amazon Fire tablet
and have never had a problem with wbmail on the Fire table.
Thunderbird throws up a notification on this Windows 11 desktop everytime there is an issue.
Here are some recent times there was a problem if this will help. These are today, 5/26/26 and are CDT

Thank you for the times when the problem has occurred. I provided this to our escalation team to review this and see why this maybe happening.

Thanks. Is there anything else I may be able to give you and when may I receive a response?

It doesn't look like any additional information is needed at this time. Generally it can take up to 72 hours to receive any responses back. -Lyn

Its been more than 72 hours.. do you have any update?

At this time our engineers have not been able to identify an issue. If you are still seeing problems with accessing email then it would be helpful if you provide recent examples of you having the problem. We need multiple customers reporting the issue on the same day so our engineers can see a pattern. We are working with other customers having similar issues and are collecting information so it can be escalated.

what kind of info are you looking for?

Provide the times that you saw an issue (Similar to what you provided prior). Once we get enough customer information that are having the issue then we can have our escalation team look into the issue.
I would also recommend testing another email client to see if there is any difference.

I'll try to collect more data… meanwhile I have another question. I get emails saying that the spectrum email server was being updated and I needed to do something.. I assumed this was a fishing attempt and disregarded it. Is Spectrum doing something real to the server and do I need to take some action? Here is an example:
SPECTRUM
Quick Reminder!!!
We have modified our incoming and outgoing email server as a result of a system upgrade.
In order to avoid losing connection and stop using our webmail and service.
Update Your Spectrum Mail Account
Any messages sent to this address will not receive a response.0 -
That is not our email. The initial link goes to a SurveyMonkey site and then there is a new link that goes to a non-Spectrum domain name. We would never send you to a SurveyMonkey website to update your email account. I would recommend you open our email on www.spectrum.net and find the email message. There is a report spam option there. This will go to our security team to research it and once confirmed then we will start to filter out the emails.

I have the same problem. I use Thunderbird to access my Road Runner email and today (June 4, 2026) it hasn't worked all day. Do we need to change our email server settings? I'm using:
incoming server: mail.twc.com port 993 SSL/TLS
outgoing server: mail.twc.com port 587 SSL/TLS
