Odd problem accessing charter.net email
Since August 20th I've noticed a problem accessing my charter.net emails while connected to my spectrum internet service. When sending or receiving charter.net mail either on my Android cell phone on my WiFi network or by using my Windows Desktop (wired connection) using Thunderbird, I get no email.
If I turn off WiFi on my cell phone the charter.net email works ok.
If I use a VPN on my Desktop the charter.net email works too.
All other functions (Web, Apps, Streaming, etc.) function normally.
Email from Google, Outlook, Hotmail all work, with or without WiFi or VPN.
Only the mobile.charter.net connection is having problems, and only while on Spectrum network. I checked with a neighbor in town and they have the same problems, so it's not specific to my modem/router configuration. It must be something within the Spectrum network routing or firewall configuration.
Any one else having this same issue?

Hi & welcome-
There is currently a known issue with Microsoft-based email clients, which our engineers are already working to resolve as soon as possible.
Are you able to access mail through the email portal at spectrum.net?

I am having a similar problem since Saturday in my area located in Southeastern Virginia and it has continued as of today.

I can access mail through the email portal at
spectrum.net, but the problem is accessing email through any other app based email client an only while on the spectrum network. I'm not even using MS Outlook. Prior to August 20 there was no issue.I'm located in Western Mass.

Would be nice if Spectrum would post a warning on their email settings page (one of the first places you'd likely go to for troubleshooting to see if something changed and you missed a notification of an upcoming change assuming they'd actually send advance notice) and also let the folks behind the support chat know so they stop pointing the finger at Outlook. Chat's response is "if you can get to your email via your Spectrum.net account page it's not Spectrum, contact Outlook." BTW, how do you contact Outlook. If it's a known issue and a simple way to get email clients reconnecting is to use a non-Spectrum internet connection i.e. hotspot or VPN own it and help folks out.

FYI. Just worked with Spectrum (A.K.A charter.net). The Support desk we:
- Stopped Outlook.
- They ran some scripts on my charter.net email account.
- Started Outlook.
- With-in 10 minutes the 0x800ccc0e issue went away.
Outlook sync is not yet perfect, but as time goes on, it appears to get better.

Same problem accessing mobile.charter.net using the Thunderbird client. Worked fine until Aug 20. Will occasionally be able to sent and receive but most of the time nada, server connection fails. The lame Spectrum web interface works. Gmail accounts in Thunderbird working fine.

Also, if the email apps all work sending and receiving mail from chater.net when on cell networks or VPN then it's not the apps or how they are configured. There has to be an issue within the spectrum network itself.

While the scripts worked temporarily, now it is broken again.
I called Spectrum support phone number, it reported service technicians are working on an email problem.
Not good news it is better than Spectrum saying no problem here.1 -

Good news! As of this morning (8/25/26 7:30 EDT) my charter.net email is working properly on the spectrum network. I sent test emails from other accounts and the emails were received without delay. I hope this issue stays fixed. I will continue to monitor and report back if the problem returns. Kudos to whoever fixed it. I know it can be a thankless job on the back end, as I have been there during my 50 years in IT.

Bill58, I was having the exact same issues as you, except I use Apple devices (email issues were present on iPhone and iPad and on a Windows PC; issue was only over WiFi, not cellular; VPN use solved the problem). The issue seemed noticeably improved last night (August 24) and appears to be resolved this morning. Holding my breath now every time I check my email.
If the issue has truly been fixed, I second your kudos to those who did so.

This will probably get deleted but just in case.
In my opinion, both Microsoft (Outlook) and Spectrum share blame for this problem. Both blame each other because both have made changes to their encryption certificate protocols without coordinating with each other and without considering the harm caused to (possibly) millions of customers and small businesses. It really seems neither is seriously attempting to find a common solution.
That said, as I understand it, Outlook changed encryption requirements that caused Spectrum legacy customers (Charter, Roadrunner, TWC, etc) from being to send / receive emails. Instead of updating their certificates accordingly, Spectrum instead made unannounced changes that not only didn't adapt but created new problems. Neither seems seriously trying to find a common solution.

Well the fix didn't last long. After 4 days I now have the same problem back on 8/28/26 @ 4pm EDT. What is going on at Spectrum ?

Yes, the E-mail problem is back, and having nothing to do with Outlook as we don't use it but certainly could be an encryption/authentication issue.

…same experience. And the worst part of this is that Spectrum insists that it wont and can't help.

Problem is definitely back as of yesterday. I'm using Thunderbird.

Same as Rebus1,
"Same problem accessing mobile.charter.net using the Thunderbird client.
Worked fine until Aug 20. Will occasionally be able to sent and receive
but most of the time nada, server connection fails. The lame Spectrum
web interface works. Gmail accounts in Thunderbird working fine"And, as one other said, if I turn OFF wifi on my phone and access Spectrum email through Thunderbird it works FINE, but turn wifi back on, Spectrum email LAGS and sometimes fails entirely to download ANY email OR MOVE email(s) from one "label" to another, such as to TRASH after deleting an email.
Oh, and, again, as someone else mentioned GMAIL works FINE, MOST OF, IF NOT ALL THE TIME.
But, Spectrum email ON MY COMPUTER, which REQUIRES WIFI/WIRED INTERNET CONNECTION through Spectrum internet cables, Spectrum email LAGS interminably.
Pretty solid evidence this IS a SPECTRUM problem.
CELLULAR access to Spectrum Email, (NO MATTER WHICH EMAIL CLIENT/APP) WORKS FINE, WIRED connection access to Spectrum Email (NO MATTER WHICH EMAIL CLIENT) Spectrum Email AT LEAST LAGS interminably OR FAILS completely.

@jec2169 - If you install and use a VPN on your desktop computer email works ok while the VPN is active. I have used this approach, but not all the sites I access allow via VPN. So I end up enabling VPN to access mobile.charter.net then disabling after. It's a real pain.

5 days and no email on my computer (outlook)… cell phone has some mail but not all…yes, the same issue is back and the wonderful support just passes the buck to Microsoft (if using outlook), however, it is not even syncing to cell phone correctly. Are they trying to get us to go to another provider or what? It the email comes down to the computer and phone at times correctly and quickly and no changes were made on the customer end, then the problem clearly lies with charter. Truely Pathetic… and the sad thing is i know they are shoveling crap as I worked in IT for years… I know the drill….always blame it on someone else or if you can access webmail then there is no problem.

Every weekend for about a month my charter.net email is not functioning normally or most of the time not at all. During the week it usually is OK. For one week I could get the mail on web email, but that is no longer an option. What's going on??

@barbara_8032 It's just Spectrum being Spectrum…We are all in the same boat at the moment. Desktop email (Thunderbird) does not work consistently either.

Also, some anecdotal evidence…It appears that if you run a VPN on your mobile phone or desktop and access email, the problems go away.
