Watchlist Gets Reset

this has been a long running issue reported by many users of the spectrum tv app on AppleTV.

Watchlist appears to get reset after updates. Has been like this for years.

The watchlist include recurring series actively on air, not discontinued programming.

Reinstalling the app doesn’t resolve it.

The app does not retain watchlist after updates.

    Hello,

I searched on this topic, found a thread in which I participated. Everyone with this Apple TV/Watchlist reset issue, try my recommendations in the last post at this thread on the next watchlist reset, and report back your findings in this thread the next time this happens:

Staffers may also want to test to see if this is user/app specific, or a known widespread bug?

I saw that thread in my search. The App has, in the past, reset my "start channel" preference, and my favorite channels.

This issue, at least for me, revolves around the "My Library" function of the app. I see recently watched and Watchlist here.

It seems like every time the app is updated this data is erased. My watchlist never grows beyond a few shows before the app gets updated and those shows disappear. I can close and reopen the app and see my watchlist, but when the app silently updates like it did on 12/10, the watchlist gets cleared.

I've rebuild the watchlist multiple times, just to have them deleted again.

I've tried the reinstall loop a few times. I found others in the Apple Store review threads mentioning this issue. It's been around a while.

    Hi Jay,

How often are these updates happening where they are clearing out your watchlist? Any other strange behavior or is it only the watchlist data that is problematic by vanishing after an update?

I dropped those details in the first post.

We notice it near weekly. Oddly we don’t see the app update indicator on the app as frequently as it appears to get updated.

The app says it took an update on 12/10/2024 3.12 (4.154489033). I’d classify it as a “silent” update as we never saw an indication it was pending and our AppleTV is on automatic.

AppleTv14.1 device make as seen in the app.

I know it’s happening weekly because there are weekly programs we seek out via on demand. The watchlist should be a reliable place to find those programs.

You notice when the list you spend time creating and recreating disappears.

It’s a common issue for many app developers. Apparently Ford, the car manufacturer can’t retain a driver’s preferences between updates either.

Odd such a basic interaction and expectation aren’t addressed given it’s a high touch, core feature of the app.

edit: I took a quick check of my other preferences and it does appear to clear those as well. I had several favorites, used less frequently, selected. They are no longer.

So I guess it’s safe to say the app is no appropriately handling user preference data during updates to the app.

I’ll mention I don’t logout of the app, it generally stays in the background when not in use, and at no point do I receive an error message from the app when this happens. No update notice is given upon launch. No messages appear when I go to retrieve the favorites or watchlist.

I found this on a forum,

A claim that the built in Apple TV WIFI signal is weak this user said:

"I found issue was the Apple TV radio (Wi-Fi) is weak. Try Ethernet cable to Apple TV and reboot. Solved all my problems " Another thing that might help is the purchase of a WIFI range extender, and connect that to your Apple TV, having the extender close to your Apple TV.

These issues will help the the Spectrum app, which is totally Internet dependent get and retain signal strength: Look at price and get a 4.5 to 5.0 star range extender and connect that to your Apple TV. See if that helps with reliability.

    https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Best+WIFI+extenders&crid=MPQQGFWZDSZI&sprefix=best+wifi+extenders%2Caps%2C191&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

There is also a claim that the Spectrum app works better on mobile devices than on TV's. I don't know how well that is substantiated. I wonder if a range extender might help with issues involving the Watch List reset?

Try using the app on another device that isn't an Apple TV for a week. Does the Watch List reset on that device? Does the Spectrum App Watch List reset with a WIFI range extender connected?

PS. These updates at one week intervals are not normal at all. This should be maybe once every three months. I recommend that everyone try my "boldface" suggestion above and report back. It will help isolate this issue.

WiFi is not the problem here and wiring it is not an option.

It reset again. I’m looking durations between reset. In this case I think the OS update cleared it.

    (Note,

The quoting option is not working properly today and I can't find a way to delete the above test or quote the above text properly.) (The quote option when hitting "enter" never goes away after two lines like it should.)

    Now, onto this issue.

If you are sure it's not WIFI, and you have checked that the app is not resetting the Watch list on other devices, Apple needs to release an update, or Spectrum needs to release an update that will hold the Watch List in place and retain user settings.

A lot of time "blame game" occurs between any of these two companies when issues like this occur. Personally, I don't like using third-party platforms because these are exactly the type of problems that can come up, and can be bothersome.

Are there tickets open on this Apple TV Spectrum App Watch List resettings bug?

Agreed. I've already opened a feedback ticket with Apple pointing to the Spectrum App's inability to store user data beyond updates. No response.

I see several people draw attention to this issue on the Apple App Store, no significant response other than to tell the user to come here. Which is why I created this thread.

It's a minor nuisance in my life, so I'm not interested unbecoming an unpaid employee for spectrum, just providing a space for others impacted by the problem to come and raise their hand.

It's been a problem for over a year at this point, it's likely a known bug they don't have the incentive to fix. I'm probably user 2 of 2 on this crap app.

    @JayAppleTV ,

I just keep my Spectrum equipment all Spectrum equipment. Used to have my own router, but when Spectrum offered the free upgrade, I got the new equipment, so now if anything goes wrong, I consider the monthly fee to be like an insurance fee ($7.00 for WIFI) so if anything goes wrong whether it be CATV, Internet, or Phone, Spectrum can take care of it over the phone, or send someone out and it's done. No Apple, no Roku, no Tivo, no third party things to get in the way.

That's another reason why I have a regular Spectrum DVR with about forty-fifty shows series and movies in my Watch List that never gets "reset." Maybe you might want to consider a traditional Spectrum cable box or DVR?I don't recommend an XUMO. But it makes everything easier when one company is in charge of equipment, performance, and maintenance.
