Is anybody out there experiencing blurry NBA games on any Spectrum channel?

For at least 18 months, I’ve been experiencing blurry and pixilated NBA games on spectrum channels. I see it’s a widely known issue as discussed on Reddit and many other platforms. Spectrum claims they’ve not heard complaints 🙄 and say they don’t investigate concerns unless through THIS forum.

    Hello @CableCutterDude ,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention! We are sorry to hear that this has been an ongoing issue for you and we'd be more than happy to investigate further. Having said that, I was able to locate your account using the information provided during the registration process. I can confirm that you are currently streaming, Is that correct?

I can say that this is not a known issue on our end, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, and we are willing to do what it takes to resolve it. I can confirm there hasn't been a reboot conducted on the modem, and there is a third-party router involved. A reboot to both devices should absolutely do the trick, but if it doesn't, I'd be more than happy to dispatch a service technician to investigate the lines for any damage. In most cases, if this is happening on multiple channels and across multiple networks that would indicate a signal issue, but if it is only happening on one specific channel, it could be an issue with the streaming network.

I don't know but i take it that upscaling/upconverting from 720p (e.g. ABC & ESPN) or 1080i (e.g. NBC) up to 1080p is one thing whereas up to 4K is quite another and how well any 4K TV or streaming device does the latter is far from a non-factor.

But the stuff that literally originates in 4K should be good to go! ☘️

    Welcome to the Community!

What steps have you tried in troubleshooting? What equipment do you use to watch TV? (Cable Box, Streaming Box, Spectrum app, PC? It is not true that Spectrum only investigates through this forum. All Spectrum social media sites, (Twitter, Facebook, this forum, calling customer care are investigated..)

First reboot your equipment leaving it off for several minutes, including Internet equipment. If the issue remains or comes back, check your cable equipment to make sure that your device is configured to your TV properly. Next, check your TV settings themselves for the following elements:

Fast motion blur on your TV during sports is usually fixed by adjusting picture settings: turn OFF motion smoothing features (like TruMotion, Auto Motion Plus, Motionflow), lower/turn off sharpness, try, "Normal" "Movie" or "Cinema" modes instead of "Sports," and ensure your HDMI cables and streaming device settings are optimal for high frame rates (60Hz+), as this smooths action but can create artifacts.

thanks, but did all that months ago. Best cables available, geek squad been here, all is aok. All other streaming including action sequences are all perfect. It’s just sports, doesn’t matter if motion is still with athlete at free throw line or in football pre-snap. Medium and distant views are blurry, closeups are ok.

It’s known issue…neighbors and friends and we will go to a bar with older TVs if we want to see a game clearly.

    Thanks for the update!

Been with cable since 1985 so I like to brainstorm about these things. You said this has been an issue for 18 months, so that's almost a year and a half. Have you had the same TV through that time? What's really strange is that you said other high speed action sequences are fine, except for sports. Normally when these things happen, it is all high speed action sequences that are effected.

Now, I noticed that you posted this issue in the Watch Spectrum.net. To clarify, this is not the category for TV problems. Watch Spectrum.net is for watching TV through the Spectrum.net website. If you are watching through your TV, mods might want to move this to the Channels and Programing or TV Equipment category.

You said it is a known issue, so I assume other people in your neighborhood with Spectrum have the same blurriness when watching sports? For reference here, could you tell us please your zip code so we know the area that you are from and the main sports channels on which this occurs? Am I correct that this is all Sports, or just NBA TV?

Google ‘NBA games blurry on Spectrum’. Or substitute ‘NFL’. Doesn’t matter if on Fanduel or network tv or BigTen Network or any other. All are through Apple TV puck. Same issue even prior on cable box but with lip sync errors. I have a 2024 Sony Bravia and prior to that had a 2020 Bravia, same issue.

Your Google search will show that this is happening all over the country. Pulling power plugs, rebooting, not using MotionBlur settings doesn’t help. I have consistent 700mbps feed.

    I agree with @Jilliana_M,

Get a Spectrum tech out. Not a geek squad person, but a Spectrum tech. If this has been going on for eighteen months, I would press the issue on investigating to get this resolved. Google search can be misleading because they are not specific to an area or equipment being used. I would personally recommend renting a Spectrum router, because Spectrum can not touch any equipment that is not theirs. Sometimes it can take 3 visits to get the crux of a problem. Since everything else is fine, it could be something equipment, line or node related that just needs to be tweaked.

Since other content is fine, it's probably a minor thing doing all this. Set up a Spectrum service call and consider renting a router from them would be my recommendations.

PS. Just want to add that I have had Spectrum long before they were Spectrum, went through several TV's and boxes and very few service calls since 1985. I have never had a blurry fast-motion sports image. On TV or Internet.

spectrum has been here twice, no answers. All other programming looks spectacular on 85” Bravia and 122 custom 4/8k projection screen.

I’m heating now that forced upscaling is the culprit, especially on big screens. Crummy 1kish sports broadcasting contributes.

    Wow!

That 85" TV must look amazing! Well, for non-sports! LOL! My highest is only a 50" Samsung and it plays everything fine through a Spectrum cable box (Arris 210 DVR.)

You mentioned the up-scaling and I think you are on to something with that. I think the stations are sending their sports channel signals to Spectrum compressed. Most people don't have the really huge close to 90 inch screen TV's, but for those that have the big screen's with Spectrum, it is affecting everybody with those huge screens. Now, I am really getting interested in this! Can you post a photo of any fast-motion sports via a screenshot so that we can all see this? Your screen size information is a very helpful update.

The problem is you probably don't want to adjust something on your TV and get clear sports and blurry everything else. Spectrum is slowly introducing 4K technology, which @HT_Greenfield posted about above, but its a gradual rollout.

    @CableCutterDude,

Thank you for providing that image. I am not showing that we have been out to address this issue and I'd be more than happy to set that up for you now. Do you have a preference on a day/ time or is the first available appointment good?

    Hi @CableCutterDude

Unfortunately, there are no appointments available for today. I did schedule the first available appointment which is for tomorrow, 12/15 early afternoon since it appears there are some minor signal issues that could be impacting streaming channels. Details are available on the My Spectrum or by logging into your online account. If this time is not good, you can reschedule or cancel using the app or or online account. Someone 18 or older will need to be present for the duration of the appointment.

As a side note, the modem has been online for nearly 2 months, so a restart of the modem may improve the signal while you wait for the technician. Let us know how it goes!

Thx, but it may be a waste of time if there are no football or basketball games on. A weekend afternoon would make more sense. 🥸

If the issue is signal based, then the service call will not need to coincide with a game. You can show the technician the screenshot of the blurry image for an example.

If you need further assistance with this issue, let us know.
