Why did my TV get stuck in a commercial loop?

Saturday evening. the screen went black for about a minute, then a commercial played. Then it went black again for about a minute and then another commercial played. It happened again and a different commercial played. This continued for several minutes going from a black screen to alternating three different commercials. When I finally realized it had been going on much longer than normal, I changed the channel then went back to what I was watching originally. That seemed to break the loop. I wasn't streaming, just watching ordinary cable TV on a Cisco 4742HDC receiver. I wanted to know what could have caused it.

    Good afternoon @deedleann824 ,

On what channel did this ha[[en? Was it a local Spectrum news channel like Spectrum News 1? Or another local network? Or was this a national network? I have heard and see instances although rare, where commercials from local networks will get stuck on these nested loops. Changing channels often breaks the loop cycle as you did

If changing channels does not break the cycle, cold rebooting the box should fix this. Turn off everything and unplug for several minutes. If the issue persists after that it could be a signal or transmission problem with that channel that would require a tech visit. The user would than tune to the ad-looping channel so that the tech can take a signal reading for that station.
