Why can't I pause and rewind live Live on Xumo using the Spectrum TV App?

Unbelievable that in this day and age, we cannot pause, rewind, FF live tv using Xumo/Spectrum App. We received our Xumo devices this week, hooked them up, thought they were great, until I wanted to go to the bathroom and tried to pause what I was watching. Nope, cannot do that. We are back to our cable boxes. However, I might keep the Xumo devices, since they are inexpensive, for streaming and in the hopes that they figure out how to add pausing live TV.

This message needs to be heard loud and clear to the developers/powers that be!!

Hi @Sharooni, welcome to our community!

In order to rewind live TV there needs to be something recording and storing content as it is watched. Even traditional cable needs a DVR to do this, and we do offer a Cloud DVR service which can grant those capabilities through the Spectrum TV app.

Most other streaming sites are also not live, they have the content loaded on a server in advance similar to watching programs On-Demand through our app instead of on the Live TV section.

Hello and welcome to the Spectrum Community.

At this time no device that has access to use the Spectrum TV app has the ability to pause/rewind/fast forward live TV. That is only an ability of the physical DVR boxes we offer. There is no information as to if or when this function will be available on the app.

While I appreciate and understand your reply, my issue is that when I called initially to inquire about ways to reduce our cable/internet bill, the XUMO box was touted as a great way to do everything we wanted. It would allow us to watch live TV and stream on one platform with no need to switch HDMI input. While the platform is great, I was never told that by getting rid of our DVR boxes and only using the XUMO box and the Spectrum TV app, we would not be able to pause/rewind/fast forward live TV. I’m not sure the wonderful representative I spoke with even knows this, but customers should be informed about this huge drawback to switching to exclusive streaming via the Spectrum TV app. Our time investment of disconnecting our DVR boxes, installing the XUMO boxes, reconnecting the DVR boxes, and numerous phone calls to Spectrum was ultimately unnecessary and frustrating.

I'm sorry, we do have Cloud DVR service that will allow you to start an in-progress recording and then view that recording with rewind/fast forward up until live. I will be happy to forward your feedback about this feature without the DVR.

We just received our xumo and started spectrum streaming. We cloudDVR the national news every evening. It appears that we cannot fast forward through the commercials and unwanted stories with the xumo but our Roku will do it. What am I missing???.

    Hi & welcome!

Are you starting the playback before or after the recording is finished?

Just found the same issue. These devices have a long way to go. The progress bar on recorded shows do not differentiate between the program and commercials and is not easy for seniors to figure out how to fast foward and remind. Spectrum needs to take some features that are included in many of the other streaming services and add them to this app to make it viable.

Can you skip directly to the end of commercials on a recording in the spectrum app on the xumo box .

If you are not able to you should add the feature because it's a pain to do it without being able to see the picture while it's forwarding to see when you are at the end of the commercial. You have to keep stopping to check and usually you overshoot and have to rewind.

Thank you so much for your help.

I agree that the lack of features with live tv is very disappointing. To not be able to pause or rewind is ridiculous. I can’t rewind during on demand shows either. I specifically asked about DVR-type capabilities and was assured I could record to the cloud. Now I find out that I need the cloudDVR. Will I be able to fast forward through commercials when I save to the cloudDVR? I agree that the streaming access for Netflix, etc. is good although I hoped that I could get all shows I watch, on any platform, to be under favorites and I think it’s just what I watch on Spectrum.

Hello and welcome to the Spectrum Community.

At this time that is not a feature on the Spectrum TV app on any of the devices. We can certainly forward up your feedback for you.

Thank you for your response. It would be great to have that feature back again.

Also another feature that we miss that was available with the old DVR Box is the ability to pause, rewind and fast forward on the live channel that you are watching.

Thank you so much for your response and have a great night.

    You're welcome!

At this time pause/rewind/fast forward on live TV is not available on any device using the Spectrum TV app. This feature is solely available on the physical DVR boxes. I can definitely forward that feedback up for you as well.

Xumo is a rolling train wreck. Constantly get error messages either channel or program we are watching live is unavailable, recordings are unavailable while in midstream (same error message as with channels), switches channels to some random one, shuts off, unable to preview while fast forwarding, cannot page up or down, cannot get to what you want to watch via guide (must input channel number while not in guide), & finally, remote that works only when it wants to. Had tech replace line to the house & now on to the 2nd box. Nothing has helped!

I have the fastest internet available and my xumo box is about 4 feet from the router, but when watching channels in the Spectrum app, it periodically buffers for a few seconds. Sometimes almost as bad as dial up internet back in the 1990s. If it's on a music choice channel, the sound periodically stops for a second or two, then skips ahead a few seconds (I guess to catch up). A teck is coming the day after tomorrow. I'm curious as to weather or not others have experienced similar issues with xumo. Also, doesn't have the option to rewind a show your watching? Seems like it's lacking a lot of features that Comcast and Cox have in outer parts of the country . Fingers crossed the tech can fix the issue.

Good evening @SdownsCLE and Welcome to our Community Forums

Thank you for reaching out to us. I am not sure what troubleshooting you have already completed. Have you attempted to reset the Xumo box and the internet equipment. The modem and router can be reset by unplugging the cable line, power line, and removing the battery backup if you have one for both the modem and the router for a solid 3-5 minutes. The Xumo box can be reset by unplugging the power to the box and then reconnecting it. Please try this and let us know if this helps out.

We do have the option to fast forward and rewind using our Cloud DVR. Please let us know if you need further information on that. -Lyn

When we try to fast forward using cloud DVR Plus on the xumo box there is no visual. We have to guess how long a commercial might be. This is just silly and should be an easy fix.

When fast forwarding, it only shows the time moving, not the show so you don't know when to stop it. Not useful.

Surprising the Spectrum app does not allow users to pause, rewind or fast forward. Sure hope these actions will be included in an upcoming upgrade.

I turned in all my cable boxes naively thinking the Xumo stream box would be advanced enough to allow all functionality. A nice savings, but the inconvenience is not welcome. Get with it Spectrum and get your app updated with these typical functions please!

When will frame by frame FF and Rewind be available with Cloud DVR on TV’s other than Apple TV’s?

We are having the same problems. I have called Spectrum customer service 3 times and I feel certain no one knows they don't FF or RW because last week someone sent us two new remotes, claimed there was a defect in some remotes, which of course didn't FF or RW either. Finally, just to get me off the phone, the Xumo specialist said-go to your local store and get them to give you new Xumos, yours are broken. We've been rewinding since what, the 80s and VCRs? Why would they ever think this is an acceptable piece of equipment? I'm very unhappy with Specreum about this.

I just got the new remote and as everyone is stating I’m in shock that I cannot, in 2023 pause, or rewind on live TV. When I was at Frontier which I thought was an inferior cable company, I could do all these things. I’m so disappointed and there’s nothing we can do. I love that spectrum knows this! I was assured that everything was state of the art when I purchased this new xumo box. They have really screwed this up and I’m so disappointed! I’m so frustrated with spectrum. I’d give anything to have Frontier again.

Why can't I fast forward the active screen. I can only see the time sequence, and not the picture. Therefore, I have to continue to guess where to stop forwarding, then reverse, then fast forward. It has been a year since this was brought up by a customer. Has the problem been remedied?

    Welcome to our community everyone.

I'd like to clarify some things regarding pausing live TV. Even with traditional cable TV service pausing was only ever possible with a DVR or VCR actively recording what you are watching to a harddrive in the DVR or cassette in the VCR. It is only Live TV when at the very latest moment available in the broadcast, so you can never really pause live only switch between live and a recording.

Xumo and similar devices do not have the space inside for large storage drives, they connect you to online streaming services who almost all are providing content that is already recorded and saved on a server accessible by the cloud. The Spectrum TV app does provide access to On-Demand programming, which can be paused just like any other online streaming service. The availability of episodes is determined by the TV networks but almost all new shows are fully watchable on demand.

We do offer Cloud DVR service which saves recordings to a cloud server for you. It has many advantages even over regular DVR service, such as being able to view the recordings from any device with the Spectrum TV app not just the DVR that recorded it, and only one fee for the entire cDVR service instead of a seperate fee for each DVR box that is rented. As the Cloud DVR service is not tied to just that one device it doesn't automatically record everything you watch on it, but you can select to start and then view an in-progress recording which will then grant the pause and other capabilities you are expecting,

If anyone has additional feedback on the intended functions of Xumo this thread is the perfect place for it, but @Angelique_M and anyone else getting error messages or other problems that do not seem intended please create a new thread for assistance.

So, if I use Xumo with the Spectrum app, and then Cloud DVR what I am watching, would it, in effect, allow me to pause, rewind and FF what I am watching? We watch a LOT of sports and pause/rewind/FF/rewatch plays throughout every game. We also pause/rewind/FF/rewatch funny commercials, news programs, etc., so use the pause/rewind/FF option ALL THE TIME. Are you indicating we could still do this using Cloud DVR with Xumo and the Spectrum app? If so, that’s a possibility though we’d have to remember to cloud DVR every single thing we watch.

Hello and welcome to the Spectrum Community.

This is not an issue with the service just not a feature that is currently on the Spectrum TV app. We can certainly forward up your feedback for you.

We just got Xumo a few days ago. Works great until it buffers which today about 4-5 times in 6 hours.
