How to setup Spectrum email to work with the NEW Outlook (password needed)

edited February 16 in Email

My Spectrum email was syncing with my Outlook account up to a few weeks ago. Now that the new Outlook has installed on my computer, it is unable to connect with the Spectrum email provider and says I may need an app password. No one at Spectrum has been able to provide a password and the basic configuration from Outlook 2021 and older does not work. Spectrum can you update the configuration settings to be compatible with the NEW Outlook, or provide an app password.

    Hello @CWross!

Thank you for your question and welcome to our community platform. We apologize for the issues you are experiencing when accessing your Spectrum email via the outlook platform. To assist you further, can you please confirm if you made any changes or updates to your current Spectrum password? Also, can you please confirm if you can access your Spectrum email directly from the webmail website with no issues?

    Hello @kmy

Welcome to our community! The app password should just be the password you use to log in to your My Account to check your email. Is that the password you were using previously?

    Hello,

The app password is a Microsoft feature. You can locate information on it by visiting https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-billing/how-to-get-and-use-app-passwords-5896ed9b-4263-e681-128a-a6f2979a7944 . If you need the email service settings for the Spectrum provided email you can visit https://www.spectrum.net/support/internet/spectrum-email-server-settings . Support for 3rd party applications is limited. You should be able to access your Spectrum email by visiting https://webmail.spectrum.net/mail or by logging into your Spectrum account at https://www.spectrum.net/login

    Hello @UpstateNYGuy!

Welcome to our community page and thank you for your question. I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused, and it seems the new outlook update has created some log in issues for many of our customers. Unfortunately, we are unable to support the use of third-party applications and servers. Some customers may experience an issue logging in to webmail after a password change, but as indicated, that is not the case for your situation. I would say that with the ability to log in to webmail working just fine, that indicated this may be an issue on outlooks end. When able, I would encourage you to reach out to their customer support team, to ensure this is escalated through the appropriate channels. If there is anything additional, we can do to assist, please let us know.

If you are able to access email using Webmail, then our email is working as intended.

The issue identified is with Microsoft Outlook and we have no control over this third party email client, any fix will need to come from Microsoft. Others have reported that reinstalling a backward compatible previous version of Outlook has been a functional workaround.

Just curious if you also have another email account set up in the Outlook app for which the service provider does support Outlook "app passwords." I don't think Spectrum email does.

    Here's Google's guidance on the matter: 🔗 https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833

    And here's 𝜇soft's: 🔗 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-billing/how-to-get-and-use-app-passwords-5896ed9b-4263-e681-128a-a6f2979a7944

In any case, maybe it's just a contemporaneous bug with your iteration of the Outlook app.

Having the same issue with Outlook not syncing with Spectrum mail. Contacted Spectrum and of course they said the problem is with Outlook. Like you said kmy…when you click repair in Outlook, entering your Spectrum password does not work. It wants an app password. Where do I get that? If you and I are having his problem, I'm sure others out there are too. Please join this discussion and let Spectrum know about this issue.

If your iteration of the Outlook app is telling you that you need an app password for any IMAP or POP email account/service, and the only thing you use the app for is IMAP or POP email services and not any 𝜇soft email accounts or services, and you contact 𝜇soft support and they reiterate what the Outlook app is telling you, and the IMAP or POP email service provider doesn't support Outlook app passwords, then you might just as well switch over to Thunderbird or whatever.

𝜇soft has been on a mission for at least a couple of years to mitigate email hacking and spam, and i do mean globally, and i do mean including how their "new"/freebie versions of their Outlook app work, so i could see IMAP and POP email services that don't support Outlook app passwords getting caught in the crossfire.

I do also recommend testing Thunderbird or another mail client to see if there are similar issues. If it works please contact Microsoft for further assistance if you wish to continue using Outlook. You can also sign in to our webmail through Spectrum.net. The limit of our support with 3rd party mail clients is providing the correct server settings, which do not include an "app password".

I recently upgraded to Windows 11 and Outlook allowed me to add my RoadRunner email. For some it reason it now will not connect without an app password. My webmail access is still working with no password change.

It is a MS problem with the (new) outlook you see in the apps setting. Mailbird works, canary did not, and spark did not. I removed the (new) outlook and was able to download the classic outlook from MS and it works fine. I will give MS some time to fix the (new) outlook and try again. Hope this helps everyone else who's having the same problem

I just looked on the Microsoft Community blog. A lot of posts about this problem. They all seem to agree that this is a Microsoft Outlook problem. We are hoping they will send out a server fix. So, let Microsoft know about this!!!

I have a two-year old laptop that has been using Outlook (new) to access my Roadrunner account. It stopped working February 5th, the same date as the original post. It also stopped working on my iPhone 14 the next day. I tried reconfiguring it on both devices so many times that I know the settings by heart (mail.twc.com, Port numbers, SSL, etc.) I contacted Spectrum support several times to no avail. Finally today (2/10) they told me that the password for Spectrum.net is not necessarily the same as for email (webmail or client mail). The support person walked me through changing my email password through selfcare.rr.com. Now the email on my phone works, but when I try to use Outlook on the laptop, I wants me to sign in, and even that password doesn't work. It said something about an app password, which lead me to this thread. I'm hoping someone can help. Spectrum said Outlook is a third-party program, which they don't support, and told me to call Microsoft. I called the number they gave me, and basically got a recording telling me to visit help.microsoft.com for support… useless. BTW I got Outlook to work with Spectrum.net email, but I never use that.

Anybody know what is being done to get email working with new Outlook? My account stopped working 3 days ago. It was working pretty good for 4 months.

Good evening @menglish33 and Welcome to our Community Forums,

Thank you for reaching out to us about Outlook. I am very sorry that you have encountered a concern accessing our email option using this third-party option. You will want to make sure the settings are still set up correctly for Outlook. I would also make sure you have access to emails by visiting our webmail option. If you do have access to your email using our webmail option but the setting suggestions did not correct the concern with Outlook I would recommend reaching out to Outlook to see if they have any additional troubleshooting suggestions. -Lyn

I am having the same issue and unfortunately I'm not sure how to go back to the old Outlook365 or if it's still supported. Typical MS 5 steps forward and 3 steps back…

The issue regarding the above appears to be incorrect login credentials. I've been working on this matter for the past three days. I believe that Spectrum is looking for a parameter in the "sign-on" stream that the (new) Outlook is not passing, specifically a "check" or "flag" associated with "SSL" that the spectrum site requires. Please look into this if you're listening…

Is there a solution to this problem?

That site tells you how to create an app password in Outlook. I never created an app password, nor can I create one; but I don't think I need one. When I click on my rr email address in Outlook, a screen comes up that says I need to sign in, but when I enter my password (the one I had just created, and that passed both tests when I created the account), it cranks for a minute and then tells me that sign-in failed.

I think there's a problem with Roadrunner on Spectrum's end. I can get into it on my iPhone, through webmail, and even using Windows Live on my 15-year-old desktop. I can also get into my Spectrum.net account through Outlook, just not Roadrunner.

Below is the info I copied to the clipboard from the error message:

    {"SessionId":"c757bea3-5009-674d-9506-8c72abffe18d", "Timestamp":1739291160220,"Error":"INTERACTIONREQUIRED"}

    Hi @Lyn_T

I have checked the settings and they are correct. I have spoken to Outlook and they are asking for an app password from my email provider (Spectrum). No one at Spectrum seems to have an app password to provide, so Spectrum needs to update the settings to pass over to Outlook without a password, or provide us a password, please.

I experienced the same issue a few days ago. Oddly enough it happened with my husband's account but mine is still working fine. I have tried every "fix" I can think of, including removing and readding the account (at the suggestion of Microsoft) and changing the password. Nothing works. And unfortunately, since I removed the account, old emails are no longer showing.

Has anyone found a solution to this? My Windows New Outlook app was working fine with spectrum email and then just suddenly stopped. I tried removing and adding the spectrum account, but it says I am entering a bad password. I can log into Spectrum webmail with that same password and it works fine. I have hotmail, gmail, yahoo mail, and spectrum email all on the New Outlook for convenience.

    Same problem.

    Hello,

The app password is likely not referring the Spectrum password. This maybe referencing the Microsoft account login. You can visit the following site for information on the app password for Outlook. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-billing/how-to-get-and-use-app-passwords-5896ed9b-4263-e681-128a-a6f2979a7944

It would also be helpful if you provide a screenshot of the error you are receiving.

Hello @mniepow; Microsoft recently updated their systems and likely is now requiring the app password to use the program. I would recommend you setup the app password for Microsoft to see it will let you into the email.
