Is there a way to disable power saving feature?

Occasionally I get a pop-up message on the TV screen "Attention. To continue watching, press any button."

Is there a way to disable that with a UR3-SR2 remote with a Cisco 4742HDC receiver?

    Hello @deedleann824;

The feature you are seeing is a power save mode. The following instructions will provide you information on how to disable the feature.

    1. Press Settings. Settings appears with a list of horizontal categories and vertical options.
    2. Use the left/right arrows to highlight Timers in the horizontal list of categories.
    3. Use the up/down arrows to highlight Power Save Mode.
    4. Press Select to turn Power Save Mode on or off.
    5. Press Exit to exit Settings.

Okay, the POWER SAVE mode was OFF, so that isn't the problem.

    Hello @deedleann824,

There are some channels that will do this on many cable and streaming platforms to save Internet bandwidth. Not just Spectrum. If Power Saver modes and Sleep Timers are all off, all you can really do is interact with the TV at some point before the 4-5 interval happens when the message comes up again. The process is called Switched Digital Video where often a digital sub channel is added to a set of other sub-channels that have a certain number of transmission bandwidth slots.

Let's say that there are 10 slots on a SDV digital sub-channel in your Spectrum market and all ten are being used because there's a lot of customers in your node that are watching the same channel. A node can be anywhere from 600-800 houses. Four hours go by with ten slots filled because they are being watched The attention message is a way of the network saying, "Hey, you have been on the same channel for four hours, please interact with your TV by pressing any key so we know that you are still watching, please press any key on your remote, if not, we need to give that bandwidth slot to another customer."

Some receivers go into sleep mode if you don't press a key, my box (The Spectrum 210 DVR,) I think if memory serves, goes back to the previous channel. Interacting with the SDV channel by changing the volume just once every four hours, changing channels, resets that timer.

Channels that are not SDV related don't have this issue. @deedleann824 , what channels do this on your box? It is common with some of the Music Choice channels. The behavior is normal. If you are getting the "Continue Watching?" without the four hour time element going through, unplug your box for one minute to reset it. If that doesn't work, you might need a service call.

I've noticed it most on Comedy Central. Usually in the "wee hours". I need the TV on to sleep and if it shuts off, it wakes me up which is annoying. Sometimes when I change the channel after the message, I see "PLEASE WAIT" which can last from a few seconds to almost a minute.

Only because i'm more skeptical that Comedy Central would be an SDV channel than that the idiosyncrasy could be something else, just curious if you are able to replicate it with nothing but the HDMI cable connected between the box and the TV (no analog!) If your TV doesn't accommodate that, then just curious if you are able to replicate it with, say, your PBS channel which would definitely not be SDV.

I can't say at this point since I usually leave it on CC at night.

BTW - I don't have an HTMI connection - it's coax from the receiver to the CRT TV.

    Sup? @HT_Greenfield,

I can conform that if my box Spectrum 210 is on the same channel for a long time, it says, "Still There? If you don't do anything we will return to your previous channel."

Below that message is a timer that counts down 10……9……..8…….7….(etc.) There is no power off, but I have Power Save and Auto Shutdown turned off anyway.

I think @deedleann824 runs the older ODN software. I had that for years, but some of the specifics are fading from memory. I can confirm that what I described is normal and only needs attention if the "Still Watching" alert is showing up very often and a cold reboot of the cable box does not help.

@HT_Greenfield I can not wait for high split conversion to come to Spectrum markets! This should eliminate SDV completely with increased bandwidth and faster Internet! Spectrum will be able to hopefully get a small number of SD channels in my area, "Metro Milwaukee Wisconsin" to HD. Flix (In the Entertainment View add on) is like a Paramount+ channel sampler with regards to its movies. Love it, but here in Wisconsin it is SD only. Other Spectrum markets have that channel in HD.

Heard that. For whatever it's worth: If it doesn't happen with HDMI-only or if it does happen with e.g. PBS in any case or if the box turns off instead of going to a different channel when the alert unrespondedly times out, then i like your chances that it's nevertheless some kind of a power-saving or timer setting idiosyncrasy with the box if not the TV.

But if you need anything besides HDMI out of an HD box, the subject box is a top-notch one to live with, residual idiosyncrasies notwithstanding. Over and out. ☘️

Comedy Central went black screen 3 times overnight although changing the channel then returning to CC temporarily fixed it.

Could be overnight maintenance which is typically from 12am-6am. The box is an older model, but is a very good model.

I'll have to not what times I get a black screen.

If it was maintenance, just changing the channel likely wouldn't he;p. I don't remember when my receiver had a firmware update.

I don't think they are updating the ODN firmware anymore. It is either the no clock on the front panel "World Boxes" that are given out now with Spectrum Guide or the XUMO streaming boxes, if you switch from cable TV to streaming TV, which I personally would not recommend.

However, just because a box model is not being updated anymore does not mean that it's no good. If you are comfortable with your box and it has no glitches to only minor ones, hold onto that box. Many people do not like change. There will come a time when that box will stop booting, like all technology and need to be swapped out, but don't worry about that til the time comes.

I am so used to the setup I have now, I am reluctant to change it. That's why I have a CRT TV, a landline phone, a computer with a Windows 7 OS and a 24 year old car. Learning new technology isn't as easy as it used to be now that I approach my mid-70s.

The last time a Spectrum tech was here, he gave me the impression that wasn't happy replacing the Cisco receiver, that had given up the ghost, with the same model. He said the next time I needed a new box, I'd likely get a Xumo and should definitely consider getting a TV that is HDMI capable. I only have the Cisco receiver because my TV doesn't have an HTMI port, only coax. I'm not sure XUMO can get the cable channels I want.
