I have a modem and router, but is this the optimum setup?

I didn't do the setup and it just looks like a spaghetti junction of wires and cables. It was working okay until the last big service upgrade 2 weeks ago. Now my internet is sometimes laggy. I'm an older person and technology is confusing to me, so don't be too critical. :)

    Hi -

The setup looks fine, I have definitely seen worse! Looking at the account side, your modem signal is strong and delivering 600mbps. If you are able to do a speed test, preferably from a different device, that will tell us a little more information.

Looking at the image, I can tell by the beige power plug, blue VGA monitor connection (see image below) and the green speaker jack, that you have some pretty old equipment that is likely outdated and has passed it's useful life for updates. VGA began being phased out in 2010, so my guess is that your equipment is between 15-20 years old. Any issues you are seeing is likely outdated equipment as opposed to internet lag.

Yes, you are very perceptive. I bought my current desktop as a refurb in 2012 and it has Windows 7 installed. I know, I know. But I'm an older person that has trouble learning new technologies. Now, I know where everything is and how it works. Same with my 24 year old Honda Civic and my CRT TV.

    Thanks for the reply.

I do understand the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality, I am even guilty of that myself. But if you are running Windows 7 you are running an operating system that has not been supported by Microsoft for over six and a half years. Internet problems could be a sign that you have been infected by malware or viruses. Not all malware is obvious, some could be using your computer for malicious or even illegal things and leaching off your internet and you might never know. There will come a time when your 24 year old Honda just won't run anymore and you will have to replace it. I think that might be the case with your current computer setup.
