Slow internet

I have Spectrum Internet Gig. It worked just fine when I got it. Runs thru a new Asus router. Was getting 600+mbps down on WiFi. No problems.
Couple days ago, I got a new promotion and they changed my package. I think it was 400mbps with Spectrum Internet Gig as an add on. They reboot my modem to change the package.
Now the speeds do not top 400mbps, mostly around 300, often below 300 in the 200 range. The upload is sometimes 29mbps, mostly the same at 40mbps.
What happened here? I did a ton of things they told me to on the phone, nothing was resolved.
Did they do something the slow the connection or is something broken elsewhere? They want me to have a tech over. Last time I did that, it was for a slow upload speed. The tech left and the problem was not resolved. It ended up being resolved weeks later without anything being done.
That said, it's frustrating paying for a service and getting super slow speeds, worse than what I had before I added Internet Gig

I sent some refresh signals to the modem. I can confirm that the gig speeds are being delivered to the modem. If the issue is still occurring, can you check the speed on a direct connect to the modem and report back?
Do you have a different router you can try? If you are getting the correct speeds on a direct connect, then the issue is likely with the ASUS router. You can also try swapping any ethernet cables and reseating the coax cable to ensure the connection is secure.

The refresh improved it to about 450mbps Upload is the same. Still not what it was getting before
I checked the coax cable. It's secure.
Ethernet cables look good.
I do not have a modern machine with an Ethernet adapter. The newest I have is from the 2000s and runs on Windows 7. Can't tell you if it will be able to handle these speeds but let me know if you want me to try it

Thanks. There could also be an issue with the equipment or with the outside cabling. The next step would be to set up a technician to investigate on site. If you would like assistance getting an appointment set up, let us know.

May want to make sure your wireless link is on one of the higher bandwidth radios... could be falling back to 2.4ghz or otherwise hitting a limit.
Can check the router's system log/wireless section to see what the link is reporting.
Can also check the QoS section of the router. Asus started including a built in Ookla Internet Speedtest tab in that section. This can show what the wired uplink to your modem is actually getting.

The connection dropped to about 140mbps yesterday, no upload speed. I called in and they sent a reboot signal to the modem, but the modem never rebooted. They said the signal going into it was fine. I cannot find anything wrong with the router. Now the download speed is mixed, usually between 400 and 500 and the upload speed is extremely slow.

Direct connect is 800-900 with the same upload, around 24

That Sounds like you may be loosing OFDM channel and it is falling back to 3.0 connection.
Our market has lost half of our 3.0 upstream channels with the upgrades taking place... which could basically result in close to the same upstream bandwidth restrictions if that happened on a large scale.

Thanks. Since speeds are "up to gig speeds", those results are well within the expected range. Looks like the router may be causing the issue, you can try troubleshooting with Asus to ensure that the settings are optimized. You can also try swapping the modem at a local store to see if that helps improve the connection with the router. Last option would be to try a different ethernet cord to connect the router, in case there is minor damage causing an issue.

I tried a few different ethernet cables. They produced the same results.
I have had speeds up to 600 on the router within the last day, up to 1200 direct connect. It seems to shift around.
No idea what the problem with upload is. It's normally been at 40. It starts out fast but quickly drops down to a lower speed. Download jumps all over the place. I don't know if this is normal or not.

What model Asus router do you have?
The wifi may not be optimized... you have frequency, channel, and width options that can have a profound impact on wireless throughput.
Should be able see the details of what each device is negotiating in the router's logs in the wireless section.
Even my old AC86 shows a profound difference between different channel widths, even on the 2.4ghz band—but if it is too noisy or far away, may not be able to reliably run wider channel settings and need to stay at the slower 20hz width for stability.

Here is an example of the variance in the wifi potential. I just took this remotely from the house. This is the System Log, Wireless log tab from my Asus RT-AC86 (running the Merlin-WRT firmware... a little different from stock, but still pretty close).
Google box downstairs connected by 2.4g, which is limited to 20 or 40 width channels. The same model Google box upstairs in the same room as the router is connecting via 5ghz, which can go with 20 40, or 80 width channels.
Note how one can achieve up to 702mbps... the other is limited to 144.

I'm right near the router, no interference issues.
Basically it's an unstable internet connection. I assume it's either the modem or an equipment issue somewhere. They can't seem to find signal issues so I doubt it's the coaxial.
Last time I posted the upload speed was 20mbps, jumping all over. Download speeds were all over the place. Both wired directly to the modem and wireless with my router. Never had an issue with unstable upload speeds, which were always generally solid going back to the 2000s when I got this service. The one time I did a few years back the technician said "I can't fix this" and it resolved itself over a few weeks. It was an equipment problem somewhere.
Today they are a bit more stable. My upload speed is solid at around 40mbps which is normal performance.
The download speeds are still all over the place, but they are at least a bit higher than they were before.
I guess I'll just wait and see what happens and if it continues

Are you in a free-standing single family home or some sort of multi-unit housing (apartment, condominium, duplex, etc.)? I'm asking because the wireless radio channels you use might be congested. Consider getting LizardSystems' Wi-Fi Scanner
and register it for personal use to get it for free. It will clearly show your devices and any others nearby. This truncated screenshot shows that there are 24 Wi-Fi SSIDs near us (including our 2). We're in a single family home that is more than 100 feet away from our neighbors. I try to manually select the least congested radio channel(s) for our Wi-Fi.

Do you have access to the modem's signal detailss? There may be some clues there depending on how things behave over time.
Mine for my netgear are available through a web interface at 192.168.100.1, and look like this:
It is a legacy DOCSIS 3.0 setup and plan, so is missing a lot compared to the newer setups... but generally shows the key data to monitor.
